Fiona Stanbury

About the Artist

I am driven by my need to paint, and my dreams about colour and paintings. My work relates as much to my 'inscape' as it does to the outer world and events around me. I see ideas for painting everywhere.

Nicosia Night

2008
60 x 91cm

Nicosia Night
I painted the city from the 6th floor of a building, using watercolour to catch the essential elements. As I developed my oil painting, I wanted to convey the relentless sound of the traffic, the flashing neon signs and advertisements, and the mystery and movement of this Middle-Eastern city.

Interior

2009
30 x 40cm

Using objects in the corner of my room, I explored the potential of shapes and marks of colour to create an autonomous world of paint.

Coastal Landscape

2007
56 x 112

Coastal Landscape
This was based on the memory of a particular journey along the coast of Cyprus one Spring day when a storm was approaching. I wanted to use the power of shapes and colours to express the dynamics of the land and sea. I like to explore the abstract possibilities of paint.

Pots on Windowsill

2008
Oil on board
31 x 46

Pots on Windowsill
This was a painting made from memory of the sunlight coming through some pots and objects on my windowsill.

Overlapping Meanings

2007
Oil on canvas
30 x 76

Overlapping Meanings
This is one of a series in which I explored the idea of still-life and landscape elements being allowed to overlap, allowing some ambiguity to be part of the image.

Overlapping Meanings (2)

2007
Oil on canvas
30 x 76cm

Overlapping Meanings (2)
Another in the series, allowing more ambiguity in that some of the marks are on a borderline between abstraction and figuration.

Women and Openings in the Turkish Baths

2008
Oil and acrylic on canvas
40 x 65cm

Women and Openings in the Turkish Baths
One of an ongoing series based on watercolours and memories of the old Turkish Baths in Nicosia. I painted in there over a 5 year period, gradually synthesising the elements that were important to me.

Cyprus Heat

2007
Oil on board
51 x 66cm

Cyprus Heat
I wanted to recreate the sizzling heat and blinding light of Cyprus in August.

Sussex Journey

2008
Oil and acrylic on board
30 x 61cm

Sussex Journey
I started from the paint, letting the image emerge through the process of adding and removing paint. This was heavily re-worked.

Kent Abstract

2009
Oil and acrylic on canvas
30 x 40cm

Kent Abstract
I often make drawings from the car or train and then work these into paintings, concentrating on the qualities of the paint and the alchemy of memory mixed with the substance of paint.

Landscape with Blossom

2007
Oil and acrylic on board
31 x 61cm

Landscape with Blossom
In this painting I wanted to use the dynamic of shapes and slashes of colour to express the space and energies of landscape as I have experienced it on my many travels. In this case, it related to a Kent journey.

Fiona and Women in the Turkish Baths

2008
Acrylic on canvas
80 x 140cm

Fiona and Women in the Turkish Baths
I wanted the figures, the chamber, the steam, and the spaces in between to have equal importance on the picture surface.

Ledra Street, Nicosia, at night, from the Shacola Tower

2006
Oil and Acrylic on board
61 x 104cm

Ledra Street, Nicosia, at night, from the Shacola Tower
I made watercolours overlooking the old city at night. In my oil painting, I was interested in the shadows on the street below, and the patterns of light and dark.

Conversations in the Baths

2007
Oil and acrylic on board
51 x 68cm

Conversations in the Baths
The Baths were often full, on Women's days (Wednesdays and Fridays) and women took it as a chance to relax and talk, have a massage, and sit around in dressing gowns having cups of strong black coffee.

Kent Fields, Groombridge

2006
Oil on board
65 x 65cm

Kent Fields, Groombridge
A heavily re-worked painting made from watercolours of a particular place in Kent that I like to paint.

Cyprus under Bombs

2006
Oil on board
31 x 60

Cyprus under Bombs
I was always aware of the tensions in Cyprus and this painting resulted from day to day living, and hearing stories about the Turkish Invasion of 1974.

Women and Arches in the Turkish Baths

2007
Oil on canvas
72cm x 86cm

Women and Arches in the Turkish Baths
One of a series intergrating the figures with the arches and architectural elements of the heated chambers.

Kent Landscape Abstracted

2007
Oil on canvas
61cm by 51cm

Kent Landscape Abstracted
This was inspired by a train journey from Ashford to Canterbury in the cusp between late winter and early Spring.

Dream Landscape

2009
Oil and Acrylic on Board
50.8cm by 40.6cm

Dream Landscape
This was worked entirely from a dialogue with paint and ideas rather than an actual landscape. I let the final image come out of the paint, with its scrapings and over-paintings becoming part of the picture.

Paphos, Coastal Walk

2009
Oil and Acrylic on canvas
40cm by 30cm

Paphos, Coastal Walk
This is a recreation of the spirit of a coastal walk I took one sunny evening in the summer in Paphos.

'Waiting.'

2008
Oil and Acrylic on Canvas
40cm by 30cm

'Waiting.'
This was a different approach! I like the idea of groupings, and saw these teapots on a trolley in a cafe. They reminded me of my groups of women in the Baths, and this is why I painted them clustered together.

Education and biography
I studied first at Hastings College of FE (Foundation year) then Canterbury College of Art. I have exhibited many times, in Cyprus, Greece, London, and all over Kent.

Future shows
This month I took part in 3 shows, including a solo show here in Tunbridge Wells. I have more planned for September and November, to be finalised.
