About the Artist

My practice although it covers a variety of media, is rooted in a particular and personal belief system and philosophy. Which can be broken down into the following 3 areas:

1. An interest in human consciousness and perception, and how an artwork can break the perceptual conventions of the everyday e.g. Lyotards notion of the post-modern sublime, Baudrillards work about simulacra, and the practice of Zen Buddhism.

2. A fascination with existing complex forms found in nature. e.g. Ernst Haeckel’s drawings, Islamic art, indigenous art, abstract expressionism, and the ongoing attempts of scientists to find the materia prima.

Finally I have a life long interest in the history and materiality of the medium that I use, be it painting, video or sound. I like James Elkins’ analogy of painting to alchemy in his book what painting is, and am aware of the way paint has been used throughout the ages, and how meaning can be impregnated in how one applies paint. My recent work aims to create subtle narratives in the different ways that I apply each layer of paint.

Favourite painters: Fabian Marcaccio, Jonathan Lasker, Terry Winters, Callum Innes, etc.
