| About the Artist |
I am a mixed-media artist with a background in Anatomy and Cell Biology as well as Fine Arts. My art is informed by this scientific study and impelled by the experience of life with a chronic illness. Bound by a mesmeric quest to unearth the human condition, I am inspired by the intrinsic beauty of the body, its fragility and strength, and the magnificence that emerges from the process of decay. I work with an array of textures that coalesce into corporeal, emotional and natural landscapes. The hand-crafted frame becomes a shell within which the work lives and thrives. Blood flows to water as the blue sea of the mind swirls about, obscuring the anguish of the red flesh underneath. Beeswax and oils take the shape of this internal terrain, while rusted steel armour remains fixed in concrete grounds. Here the body finds its bond to the materials of urban life – eroding metal, cracked cement, worn wood, and lost and weathered objects strewn on city streets. Like our own flesh and bones, these media wear and crumble over time. Using a unique mixture of a cold beeswax paste, and/or these various items and parts, I build my art through a tactile process that is worked from the ground out, into three-dimensional space. Paintings are transformed into sculptures – voluminous pieces with a body and soul, and a depth that reaches beyond the wall. |
