Helena Hötzl

About the Artist

Helena Hötzl harnesses and manipulates perceptual reality in her work, using as a foundation startlingly vivid painterly sequences of events or phenomena such as birth, life, sex, nature and loss. Born in Alingsås, Sweden, her work highlights elemental images, using dramatic ploys such as contrasts in scale, shifts in focus, mirrored reflections, and multiple or layered surfaces. Sensory perception for Hötzl is a spiritual activity, one that leads to a heightened awareness of both nature and culture—this thought process points to a new kind of realism—one that is engaged with the actual processes of life. The result is a combination of psychedelic/decorative vistas with layers of text and form.

Combining both figurative and non-figurative elements with her love of strong lines and vivid colors, Hotzl who has exhibited her work internationally, from London and Sweden, to the U.S. and Hungary creates bold, poetic works. Inspired by her encounters with different people, in one body of work, she paints large close-up portraits. Some of the people she paints are real some of them are fantasy. Expressing her impressions of the people she meets, these works also reflect the varied expressions that can be found in the human face. Her works have a timeless, magical quality. Reminiscent of a dream voyage to the calm beaches of another planet, her pictures are deeply personal, evoking her own subconsciousness while also revealing universal truths about the journey and celebration of life.

Written by Suzie Walshe for the New Yorks Arts Magazine.

Education and biography
Education
Make-up - London, Greasepaint London School of Makeup
Graphic Designs and Illustrations - Gothenburg, Nordic Technical Institute NTI
Advanced Media Technic - Gothenburg Nordic Technical Institute NTI
Illustrations - Stockholm, Bergs School of Communication
Helena Hötzl grew up in a small town called Alingsås about 400 km Northeast of Gothenburg in Sweden. After studying makeup and colours in London and Graphic Design, and Advanced Media Techniques and Illustration in Gothenburg / Stockholm, Helena moved back to Alingsås with her husband and their two children.

“As a child I always wanted to become a Makeup Artist. I just loved to draw and paint. When I was old enough, I left for England, to train at The London School of Makeup, Greasepaint. As a Makeup Artist I could use colours and change the look of people. I found it fascinating for many years!
But after my first child was born, I decided to study further. I went to the NTI school in Gothenburg (The Nordic Technical Institute), where I studied Graphic Design and Advanced Media Techniques.
I did various commissions in graphic design for advertising purposes for different companies.
I wanted to develop my illustration skills even more, and joined the Berghs School of Communication for their Illustration course.

I have done many illustrations for Design Torget, in Sweden. Design Torget is the name of a prestigious chain of designer shops, who sell only especially selected original designs.

About 2 years ago, I went to a gallery in Sweden to have one of my illustrations framed.
The owner of the gallery was thrilled over my art and wanted to buy it right there and then. And that was the day I decided to go for the next step – to really start selling my art.

I create in a mixed media. Ink, acrylic, aquarelle, promarkers, crayons and also by the computer, in the creative programs.”
