| About the Artist |
In the world of information design the words fine and art are believed to not exist. Today, most institutions teaching graphic or visual communication make a firm stance to institute this concept. This militant separation has strictly made the break between the designer and artist of today. Visual communication (graphic design), a process oriented practice, seeks to answer and communicate solutions for external voices. To be a designer is to define, innovate, and generate value for a clients need. Design is made to be used.
Typically, the practice of a designer is enough contrast for the workings of an artist. Artists may or may not work by process and may or may not wish to solve problems created by others then themselves. In general, art is an inward dialogue that answers to internal responses from the artist. Art is made to be viewed.
But what happens when you mix the two. Both practices, both mind sets, both understanding of problem solving ideas? If a designer who is formally trained refuses to answers questions for others except himself, will it be art that’s created?
As a designer and artist, I am interested in the question of design being art. The middle gray space that exists between the two inspires my drive to create and pose questions only I can attempt to solve. Through the execution of systematic design that’s conceptually derived, I utilize typographic elements to understand and define issues of home and place. |
