Inge Van Der Ven

About the Artist

Skin is like a container and protects against influences from our surroundings. It shapes a border between inside and what should stay outside. Also skin can be seen as a tool in communication. It gives us the possibility to feel and gives information about how we feel. Clothing and houses have similar functions. One could see them as second skins. The physical house is like a body where walls define the space where the vulnerable and fragile may exist. This idea is quite prominent in the work, paintings and objects, of Inge van der Ven. Therefore the choice of certain materials is of vital importance. For instance, the use of rubberlatex, hair and stockings literally give the object a skin and indirectly a personality. Besides that Van der Ven often works with less common materials like used tea bags or used floor cloths. She takes them out of their original meaning and puts them in a new context.
