Ingrid Koehler

About the Artist

For my inspiration I need direct contact with nature in order to develop an idea. So the first step to my art are sessions outside amidst nature- where sketches, water colourings and smaller oil-sketches come into being. Also I utilize brief impressions from memory as an impulse to develop the momentary motive. Then larger variations are completed in my studio- on many sessions- where many layers of colour are used in order to create a relief-like surface. I work with brush, spatula and fingers. I like to bring colours in rhythm with structure to create tension in a picture. To me it is important to notice the moment, when you have to stop painting so that the piece of art still appears lively and spontaneous despite the long hours of work.
My work shows a stylistic variety from concrete impressions to abstract colour studies. In the last years some series of landscapes and free colour composition, which seem to reappear in their basic structure, turned out to be the most important to me. This is how some repetitious series originated.
During my studies at the Academy of Art in Munich I felt attracted to traditional European painting, especially the Italian Renaissance and the French painters of the last centuries. My extended visits to Paris/France, Venice/Italy, The USA /New York and Florida), Canada, Egypt and Greece left impressions that are processed in my work.“
