| Jean-Michel Birais |
| |
|
Jean-Michel Birais tells his own story. His paintings reflect his suffering and his healing process. He creates from memory, a fading layer of time mixed with a shade of hope. (Alain Broutin)

| About the Artist |
Never holding back, the paintings of Jean-Michel Birais take on a most original form. With an array of colours based around the central design the artist surrounds his subject with poignant references to the major theme. His paintings are built following an unusual and at times disturbing structure. His style extracts itself from the ordinary. (Luis Porquet) |

| Education and biography |
I was born in 1952 in Nantes. I studied at the “Beaux-Arts” in Orleans and then became a ceramist for a few years. I used a wood fuelled kiln to fire my pottery and utilised plant ash in my enamelling process to capture the essence of the work of Bernard Leach. I have illustrated children’s books (Disney, Babar) and publicity material.
Since 1997, the year my wife died, I have devoted my talent exclusively to my paintings. |
