About the Artist

I’m interested in making art about life, not so much art about art. Paying attention to experience has its own rewards, providing endless ideas for new art.

One of my goals is the successful integration of subject, form and content. When I think about possible images I think in terms of metaphors, mini-narratives.

The Finalists

2007
41x51 cm

The Finalists
Our legendarily laid-back neighborhood is being demolished lot by lot these days. It is easy to lament the lack of sensitivity behind the seismic neighborhood changes...

Point of view/23

2008
acrylic and paper on gessoed cardboard
35.6 cm x 40 cm

Point of view/23
Was going to give up using birds (so many artists using birds as metaphor these days) Then decided, birds resonate with us for a good reason: they are the last wild thing living close by--

swing

2008
oil on canvas
50.8x40.6

swing
love, who could live without it? but living with it has driven many a person to drink or worse. This is one meditation on the curious equilibrium between lovers.

Big Storm

2007-8
oil on canvas
40.6 x 50.8

Big Storm
From our back deck we can watch amazing lightning storms approach austin from west Texas. One day I thought how scary it could be if you lived far away from other people and the lightning was crashing aorund your little house--

Bluebird

2008
oil on canvas
91.4 x 61 cm

Bluebird
girl letting go of the bluebird of happiness...

your whole life can change in an instant

2009
intaglio
20.3 x 25.4 cm

your whole life can change in an instant
This image was inspired by many recent events and the title says it all.

Tightrope (the commuter)

2007-8
oil on canvas
91.4 x 121.9 cm

Tightrope (the commuter)
our town is growing in every direction and driving anywhere is increasingly stressful, crowded; commuting can be a nightmare, and inspired this image.

Wayward

2010
carborundum print
50.8 x 38

Wayward
Portrait of a wily neighbor-- relief print with pastel added.

Moi

2009
oil on canvas
30.5 x 30.5

Moi
Inside many adults lurks a brat...

Education and biography
Started drawing as a little kid, studied painting in high school and then drawing and composition in college before losing courage and getting a practical degree...got a second chance, so went back to college for a fine arts degree (UT-Austin). Inspirations are everywhere, my own life or the larger world. Have to restrain my imagination to be consistent w/ images. Please see my pages on jillalo.com or artist.de for resume.

Future shows
July 2010: Pump Project, Austin, Texas: Hot Prints exhibit
