Jo Dennis

About the Artist

Dreams, sex, self, mortality, the subconscious and, paradoxically, consciousness, all specific aspects of the human condition, are the themes which underpin Jo Dennis’ practice. She is interested in the connection between man and beast and the ridiculous nature of vanity, identity and beauty. Coupled with this is a fascination with the hyper-real states of self awareness and self loathing which stem from the excesses of modern life; binge drinking, drug induced paranoia, sexual disgust…

Dennis’ working process is lead by the accidental nature of paint and ink blotting. Within this process she is concerned with control and loss of control, not only in terms of the paint and ink but also in terms of emotion and fear.

Using disparate components, dark humor and personal symbolism, she revels in the use of irreverent language, both written and visual. Dennis draws the viewer in with familiar imagery and form, both human and animal, creating a sense of comfort; an understanding with the viewer. This comfort is shattered by the ambiguous and disparate arrangement of these motifs, forcing uncomfortable truths upon the unsuspecting viewer. Dennis creates a fantastical juxtaposition of the beautiful and the disgusting, the familiar and the unknown.
