What comes to mind when you think of the word, homeless? Drugs, alcohol, violence? What about children, mothers, fathers, or veterans? What about the elderly with no family and no money? All they have is a wheelchair to sleep in or a box to lay on.
Art4TheHomeless is a network of artists who use their artwork to promote Homelessness In America. Just recently, there have been international artist and musicians supporting the cause--a gift. America helps other countries and we are blessed for the few who want to help the forgotton Americans, The Homeless.
The average age of a homeless person is 9 years old. Due to family issus, my mother and I were on the streets most of my childhood, in shelters, in a car, in abandoned houses, wherever we could be. We were finally stable for some years, then she moved to Atlanta to find work. I came after Hurricane Rita. My landlord kicked me out so he could make money off the movie industry. Ever seen The Guardian with Kevin Costner? Yeah, they are the ones who rented out space from my landlord. I went to Job Corps, and my mother became disabled, but our government didn't want to hear that so she was on the streets until I got out of Job corps. Then we were both on the streets after I lost my job due to an accident. I wound up getting another job and my boss made sure we were off the streets. Then my mother after waiting for 3 years, finally got disability and we are doing well. We are the lucky ones. We witnessed a murder and were fortunate that the killers didn't kill us when they walked passed us.
Not every homeless person is a crackhead, stinks, or drinks. Yeah, I drink, only socially, I don't let it run my life. I let God run my life.
What would YOU do if you were suddenly homeless with most of America judging you harshly? That is what Art4TheHomeless is here for--not to judge you but to help you. We have links to help in your state, links to blogs by homeless people just like I used to be. Art4TheHomeless is here to let you know that you are not alone and never will be. That was the lesson I had to learn when we were just homeless last time. I was upset, feeling alone, and abandoned when the whole time God was with us and protected us and I had Art4TheHomeless, though I created it, I had people that supported my goals, my dreams, and people who I have never met face to face pray for me.
