Jools Johnson (b.1974 Wrexham, Wales) lives and works in London. Since completing an MA Painting at Wimbledon School of Art in 2002, Jools’ practice has evolved into predominately conceptual, installation and construction work that has been widely exhibited within the UK and recently internationally.
Recent exhibitions include selection for the Profilo d’Arte Award 2008, Museo della Permanente, Milan (Oct – Nov 2008) Touring show; Concrete Dreams, APT Gallery, London (Sept 2008); Short-listed for the biennial Sir Leslie Joseph Young Artist Award 2009, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea (Feb 2009); Hun Gallery International 2009, Hun Gallery, New York (March 2009);Sustainable Art Awards, BASH Studio, London (June 2009) and A Patch of Grass Painted to Look like a Rock, IPS, Gent, Belgium (June 2009)

| About the Artist |
The most recent project, ‘God lives in Detail’ (2007- ), involves deconstructing and assembling constructions from recycled computers. Escapism is the considered theme as Jools presents his love / hate relationship with computers. As one of billions who enslave their deteriorating eyes at the pixilated screen, Jools finds solace in constructing a beauty of his own from the discarded machines that now stockpile in recycling centres.
The ideas for composition and structure are inspired from the metal skeletons and colourful circuit boards that are removed from within a computer. Every screw, nut and bolt is reused to assemble these constructions. Nothing is added that is not already a part of a computer. Each computer holds a story and this reconfiguration of its life presents a new beginning for the viewer.

A Long Walk Ruined

The tee pegs are secured randomly within a formal structure to form the illusion of a piece of manicured grass. The work reflects the reality of a golf course being man-made and perfectly landscaped, illustrating man’s impact on redesigning nature. Additionally, as a green tee peg is a rarity within the game, the material used for the installation not only creates an illusion of nature but also mirrors the scarcity of nature’s resources. In a society caught in the presence of global warming, the work ‘A Long Walk Ruined’ 2008, re-evaluates our perception of our surroundings. The image captures an idealistic view of nature, yet underneath reveals a darker side that mimics the true reality of the world in its current state. |
