JORGE MENDES is a Brazilian Painter living in Antwerpen

| |
| About the Artist |
This exhibition focuses on the sickness currently infecting art.
Like much contemporary art today, these 8 up-close, large scale painted portraits, seem to have taken a pounding. In his attempt to resuscitate, Mendes operates with the speed of an emergency room surgeon, while digging for what’s of real importance in art.
Executed in the established style that appeared in the early 70’s that has been referred to as “Bad Painting”, (think Martin Kippenberger, Phillip Guston, Robin Winters, Ray Smith…..) these works are more concerned with responding with, quick ,intelligent creativity, than in pursuing a refined technique to produce that one “Masterpiece”.
Unafraid to take on taboo issues, Mendes confronts them head on. As a non Jewish, Brazilian male, Mendes has no business trying to explain a Jewish experience like his “Joden” painting, or his equally controversial paintings that utilize the feminine sanitary napkin that he’s made to look like it’s been used. But on the other hand, maybe it takes someone from outside, to see clearly, forcing us to focus on the critical issues involved.
These issues are put forth quite bluntly in this exhibition. Beginning with the first painting at the door, we have a directress in hiding, there is always someone controlling things. This clearly states that all is artificial. The portraits are clearly actors in the play. In his use of the mirror Mendes implicates all of us. We all play a role.
The leading lady is a beautiful star, until viewed from the side, then, her deformities are revealed. We have the black man, the transvestite, the second lady, beautiful, but what happened to her? The girl with facial blemishes joins us…. in all of our imperfections.
In painting the portrait, the artist sympathizes with the African male….. who appears to have been severely beaten…… however… serves to externalize the intrinsic abuse that strangers face in a strange land.
As a friend suggested, “It looks as if you were painting a nice portrait of this guy, then he started smarting off, so you had to kick his ass with your brush”.
True or not it’s………………. a funny story, that speaks clearly to the issue of communication in art. That is, communication between the art work and its maker, and hopefully by extension, between the artwork and its viewer.
In the painting of an open wound, Mendes seeks to provide help, but when the situation is desperate he amputates……………………… Getting back to the issue of seductive beauty, his sculpture suggests that a pure beauty is still possible……….please don’t touch………… but, observe with an open and working mind…. considering the possibilities that still exist.
Creative intelligence can lead us to a prosperous future…………… let’s support it!!

TIDE OP SINT ANNASTRAND
After last weekends presentation of a large scale, public outdoor sculpture by the Antwerp based, Brazilian artist, MENDES , entitled 'Tide', which took place on the Saint Annake Strand, on Antwerps Linkerover, The tide rose so high that part of the work has blown across the Schelde and landed in the gallery on the Kronenburgstraat. You are invited to view what remains from Dec. 6- Jan. 19, 2008. A reception will be held on Thursday, Dec. 6th, from 8 -11 pm.
The title, 'Tide', is a reference to the unstoppable flow of water around the world, but can also be read more locally as a word play on the Flemish word for time,'Tijd', pronounced almost the same. This piece conjures up idea's such as global Migration, (and the difficulties an emigrant faces trying to find his place in a strange land), nature vs. civilization, ecological issues, and arts place in society.
Could you please list us in the appropriate section of your publication. Photo's and interviews are available upon request. The listing should read:
MENDES 'Tide, Artifacts', Dec. 6 - Jan. 19, 2008
Reception Thursday. Dec. 6th from 8 - 11 pm.
Press Release:
" TIDE "
We are pleased to announce the presentation of a large scale, public outdoor sculpture by the Antwerp based Brazilian artist, MENDES. This presentation, entitled "Tide" will take place on the Saint Annake Strand, across the Schelde, on Antwerps Linkerover. The work will be on view for only one weekend Dec. 1-3, 2007. An Opening reception will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1st, From 2-5pm. Please remember to dress warmly !
This work has been entirely funded by the artist. Feeling the pressures of time, Mendes doesn’t wait for official approval, or subsidies, he moves forward, selecting a place to execute his work. Content in a location unwanted by most, (the beach in the winter), his is a wry commentary on life in contempory society. Conjuring up idea's such as global
Migration, (and the difficulties an emigrant faces trying to find his place in a strange land), nature vs. civilization, and arts place in society.
The title "Tide" is a reference to the unstoppable flow of water around the world, but can also be read more locally as a word play on the Flemish word for time,"Tijd", pronounced the same. It's hard to tell when these works arrived at their present location. They could have been here for years, and only recently revealed by the changing tide of the times.
Mendes's Brazilian heritage also brings back thoughts of the Conquistadors. Having ridden the tides to the America's, they should have know the same tides would recede, bringing back with them pieces of the America's. These modern day migrates come with decidedly more peaceful goals. Seeking to learn from our new found land, we also seek to contribute, providing incites that may go unseen by those too familiar in their natural surroundings.
These additions can be seen as scars in the landscape, (reminesant of Land Art form the early '70's), but can also be seen as an attempt to open up the situation, releasing the interesting ideas bubbling just below the surface. Leaving his mark on both mother earth, (society), and his chosen profession, (art), Mendes seeks out new ground for artistic exploration.
We'd like to invite you to join us to view this temporary installation. There will be a special press preview on Saturday Dec. 1st from 10-12am. Photo opportunities will be provided, and the artist will be present for interviews. Could you please list us in the approiate section of your publication, The listing should read:
