Julie Anne Denton

About the Artist

My work is and always has been deeply rooted in organized religious belief and its iconography. The idea that rules made up 500 years ago or more cannot be broken or revised; the ideology that Christ will come back and rule on the Earth for a thousand years with the righteous dead in his wake; the rumour that nuns were raped and tortured and their children murdered in a Canadian nunnery. All these premises and more are the things that interest me! My love of the 14th Century artist Hieronymus Bosch and the glass artist Bertil Valien encourage me to create wonderful what if’s… and maybe’s. Spiked with a bit of black humour to boot, I hope to encourage the viewer to think and laugh and question!

(I am Manx, with a Celtic tradition behind me) Urban Ancestor is a representation of someone walking tall in a contemporary society with their traditional self intact
