Julie Atkin

About the Artist

Alongside my artistic practice, I am also employed as a Community Mental Health Worker for Rethink (formerly the 'National Schizophrenia Fellowship'), the largest severe mental health charity in the UK, and am currently studying for a Masters Degree in Art Psychotherapy Practice at the Northern Programme for Art Psychotherapy in Sheffield.

I facilitate therapeutic art sessions within the community for people experiencing mental health problems.

Additionally, I also deliver workshops to young people, engaging them to make the right choices through the exploration of positive and negative emotions and their consequences via art-making activities.

I have over 8 years experience teaching art to young offenders & adults in a forensic setting.

My primary interest in the context of my work is in expressing & exploring the enigmatic power of ‘free association’ mark-making.

My paintings also reflect an interest in our sensitivity to scale and the psychological phenomenon known as ‘pareidolia’ - an occurrence in which a vague and random stimulus (usually an image) is mistakenly perceived as recognisable.

Through the use of a wide range of mixed media, via contrasting colours and evocative textural qualities, my paintings allow the viewer to make their own personal, spiritual and emotional associations.
