| Artist Statement
My artwork is based on the concept of sonic brainwave entrainment. I was also inspired by the concept of Sound Therapy and the theory of String Universe. I experiment the connection between wave, frequencies and vibration through human senses which experiences “energy” around us. Everything physical is composed of energy. Quantum physics has shown us that there is no such thing as solid matter; there are just waves that interact. Our body is made up of energy as well as our mind, soul and spirit. All these things are the various forms of energy. All matter, broken down into subatomic particles consists of pulsing energy fields. This includes the human body in all its facets, from physical to emotional to spiritual; the body gives off and is affected by frequency or vibration.
Through this inter-disciplinary art-science applied artwork, I intended to create an interactive media installation that has the therapeutic element using binaural beats that controls the natural functioning of the brain that encourages coherent brainwave activity. Using sound art as the main element, I explore the binaural beat frequencies which is believed has the healing effect on human. I combine the binaural beat frequencies into two different sounds that are the human heart beats sound and Jupiter’s Radio Wave (electromagnetic wave) as metaphor of life vibrating which has the connection of universe-body through organic and natural form of music sources form of sonic experiment. The installation is set to look like a “mad scientist laboratory” running a sonic experiment. Using industrial materials in producing the artwork add an interesting look to convey the message visually. Supported with visuals projected from electronic cathode-ray tubes where it translated the unseen wave patterns into the visual form.
Using digital sound sampling technique, I developed a sound composition based on the mixture of binaural beats with human heart beat and binaural beats with Jupiter’s Radio Wave. I programmed the Theta wave signal using Frequency-Tone Generator Software. I also collected human heart beats using biosensor machine and the Jupiter’s Radio Wave through Radio Telescope. All selected wave are mixed into a composition through sound editing software. The final mix is controlled and played in real time by the audients through MIDI key controller connected to the computers. The stereo sound system projected the sounds to audience. Stereo sounds are required to maintain the stereo separation of the tones needed for our auditory system to create the binaural beats effect. Audient will be experiencing music from outer-inner space where he himself compose and create.
Through this artwork, participating audients will experience sound entrainment through their brain. When audience plays the keyboard, sample sound of binaural frequencies is applied to their brain and it becomes possible to entrain their brain frequency from one stage to another. In this artwork, I purposely design a 4Hz and 6Hz theta wave frequency which has deep meditation and access to unconscious trance-like state frequencies. This process involves applying a stimulus to the brain that will eventually bring the brain's state closer to the stimulus frequency. This phenomenon is also called frequency following response. Using both hemisphere of the brain to listen to waves is like thinking in stereo experience.
