***All artwork contributed to this site by Karen Sloan is copyrighted.
Karen Sloan was born in Toronto, Canada, but now resides in the Haliburton area of Ontario, not far from Algonquin Park.
Karen was a professional floral designer and horticulturalist for 15 years, and this heavily influenced her painting style. It has gained her much insight concerning flowers, interiors and landscapes. Her paintings feature strong colours, pure themes, and expressive form.
Collections:
Pop singer Prince owns one of Karen's works, as well as the Steam Whistle Roundhouse Brewery. Her works are included in private collections all across Canada, as well as in the USA in Florida, Texas, Washington D.C., New York City, Pennsylvania, Virginia and California. Internationally her work’s are in Scotland, England, Germany, Australia, Holland, Japan, and South Africa.

| About the Artist |
Words are like a second language to me as I am predominantly a visual thinker. I translate the pictures from my head into full-colour onto the canvas, which is aided greatly by listening to music, or more specifically, Jazz music. Having painted from a very early age, I decided to become an artist so that my obsessive painting would have an excuse, and thankfully it’s never left me. I consider myself a colourist who paints mainly interiors and still life. I am fascinated by colour, light and shadow, with my end goal as having created a work of art with depth, on what would otherwise be nothing more than a 2 dimensional flat surface. Exaggerating my chosen subjects with a dreamlike or surreal quality brings me never ending joy, especially when I find elements of the work that begin to jump towards the front of the canvas, seemingly detached from the background. This last characteristic, I think stems from my method of working. I will paint a canvas and leave it for a few days to work on another, returning to the first one to add features and adjust colours with a fresh sense of what is needed to complete the work.
