Kathleen Fabre

About the Artist

From an early age I had a natural desire to create art. Comics & illustrations were my main source of interest & pencil my preferred medium. Prior to furthering my education, my life in art was pretty much dormant - dabbling but never fully immersing myself. After completing my first year at uni, my passion for art has been re-ignited & I continue to thoroughly enjoy my journey of development & exploration into various art forms, including sculpture, photography, printing ..... the list goes on!

Untouchable 1
The Untouchables - Through a development of ideas and influences my work led to a natural progression into sculpture. From exploring the surface of paint, I became drawn to the drips formed at the end of a poured surface. Developing this interest I focused on extending the dripped form. Combining this method with initially using a found wire mesh sheet, I constructed a cube to use as a 3D platform to contain the drips. Each ‘Untouchable’ is influenced by the latter. The horizontal and vertical lines within the cubes mirror those within the ‘light damaged prints’, and clearly inspired the choice of colour and type of paint used. Each piece begins with a vision. The sculptures are developed panel by panel with an almost 3D painting composition in mind. Once construction is complete the paint surface becomes untouchable.

Paper Jam 1
'Waste' Print collection - As a by-product from the mass production of photographs, white gloss light damaged prints are created. The results are unique & unpredictable, with various red & black forms. Usually these prints are discarded, but I was drawn to the 'waste' prints & so I began a collection. Having explored collage & scratching drawings into the surface, I found enlarging the prints - standing alone - had the greatest affect. 'Paper Jam 1' & 'Paper Jam 2' are a combination of chemical & light damage - prints have become trapped within the developing process during a machine break down.

I found 'Waste Print 3' particulary amusing as the random light damage forms have a uncanny resemblance to a penguin!

Films are automatically fed through a scanner, in turn all images are printed, including the light damaged ends of film rolls. Again these prints are usually treated as waste. The vivid colours & interesting forms enticed me to save them from there normal destination - the bin!
