| About the Artist |
I am passionate about oil painting and portraiture. My work involves large colourful
portraits painted in a photorealist style, with contrasting light and
dark tones. I work from photographs which I have composed and
taken, and adjust the colour and light to depict certain moods and
capture the personality of the person I am portraying. In my work I explore classical painting techniques, building up layers of glazes to
allow light and colour to emerge from the ground of the canvas in a celebration of paint.

This work focussed on the notion of gender as a masquerade; whereby gender is unstable and socially constructed. Appropriating well recognised images of ‘iconic’ women in contemporary society by using a male body, my work aimed to subvert traditional ideas of gender norms and challenge the “Gaze”. |

Painted in oils while using various classical techniques such as ground painting and glazes. The scale of the work, specifically 8x6ft, is an important element as it allows for an imposing and powerful effect on the viewer. I use a brightly coloured palette, with a particular interest in combining warm and cold colours for a striking effect; incorporating chiaroscuro to create depth and interest. Additionally, the composition in my work is both bold and simple; lack of background detail means there are no distractions from the face, which encompasses the majority of the canvas. |
