Katrina Pallon

About the Artist

A maximalist whose creative works are highly influenced by the intricacies of French art nouveau, Katrina Pallon's paintings, illustrations, and photographs attest to her love for elaborate designs and her knack for romanticizing even the simplest of subjects. Her works echo her enthrallment to Venetian masks which she combines with ornate Pan-Asian motifs to visually depict surreal landscapes, figures and montages. Her works are mostly about the play of colours – of warm, vivid tones to translate into paintings and/or photographs even the darkest and melancholic of images.

At present, she is working on mass producing her thesis – a coffee table book on masks and the MassKara Festival of Bacolod City – which has earned an Award of Merit for Thesis in the Publications Category and an Award of Excellence for Thesis Research. This she does while participating in spoken word events, singing for an independent band called Scarlet Tears, and continuing to do numerous masks, paintings, illustrations, as well as capturing photographs. Masks, flora, circuses, and carnivals fascinate her to no end and have been her constant source of inspiration for her artistic works.

Midnight Masquerade

2007
Mixed Media on Paper
50.8 cm x 38.1 cm

Midnight Masquerade
Midnight Masquerade is a self-portrait. It was particularly designed to resemble a tarot card, and is meant to be viewed both upright and upturned. Masked or unmasked, I thrive in the night.

Allure of Alliums

2007
Water colour and ink on paper
36.83 cm x 29.21 cm

Allure of Alliums
Inspired by the artist’s favourite work by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, OF LOVE AND OTHER DEMONS is a 7-piece collection rendered in ink and water colour. Fundamentally, it depicts women in various states of suffering caused by affairs of the heart. The women illustrated in each piece are treated by the artist as romanticized canvases of pain – with wounds and blood turned into ornate details, while hooks, blades, and chains are converted into blossoms, buds, stems, and thorns. Allure of Alliums is the first in the series.

Blossoms of Grief

2007
Water colour and ink on paper
36.83 cm x 29.21 cm

Blossoms of Grief
She wollows in anguish beneath pink-frosted apple blossoms flourishing from her spine. "Blossoms of Grief" is part of the 7-piece collection entitled OF LOVE AND OTHER DEMONS.

She Blooms in Black and White

2007
Water colour and ink on paper
36.83 cm x 29.21 cm

She Blooms in Black and White
A variation of "Blossoms of Grief" with darker hues yet exuding a much lighter mood. "She Blooms in Black and White" is part of the 7-piece collection entitled OF LOVE AND OTHER DEMONS.

Weeping Irises

2007
Water colour and ink on paper
36.83 cm x 29.21 cm

Weeping Irises
Tears fall from her azure eyes; a spray of irises flourishes forth from the tears-soaked earth. "Weeping Irises" is part of the 7-piece collection entitled OF LOVE AND OTHER DEMONS

Poppy Love

2007
Water colour and ink on paper
36.83 cm x 29.21 cm

Poppy Love
An image of a female with an abundance of elegant poppies in warm tones resting on her head – blooms reminiscent of her once passionate love gone cold. "Poppy Love" is part of the 7-piece collection entitled OF LOVE AND OTHER DEMONS.

Bleeding Chartreuse

2007
Water colour and ink on paper
36.83 cm x 29.21 cm

Bleeding Chartreuse
Greenish-white dogwood blossoms seem to flutter above her head. Their banches, densely intertwoven, conceal the gaping hole on her partly-hooded head. "Bleeding Chartreuse" is part of the 7-piece collection entitled OF LOVE AND OTHER DEMONS.

Roses in Exchange for a Heart

2007
Water colour and ink on canvas
36.83 cm x 29.21 cm

Roses in Exchange for a Heart
The 7-piece collection is capped off by "Roses in Exchange for a Heart" which is a portrait of a woman baring her open chest. Thorned crimson roses bloom in profusion inside it – roses she was given for every piece of her heart she so willingly offered in return. In the end, she never got it back. The series is currently on exhibit at TOASTED (1st floor of the old building of Sta. Lucia East Grandmall in Cainta, Rizal).

Education and biography
In April 2007, Pallon graduated as a Magna Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines- Diliman with a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication.

She has received numerous awards in academic and fine art competitions she has actively participated in. In 2004, she was a finalist at the Pen & Ink Division of the Bantay Kalikasan Art Contest and in the following year, two of her works in photography were awarded as part of the 200 Best Images 2005 by Epson Photo Imaging Exposition and were featured in the “Epson EPIX 200 Best Images 2005” coffee table book. In 2005, she was commissioned to do illustrations and a cover art for UNICEF handbooks on Child Protection. Her collaborative work, entitled “Moondancer,” was a finalist at the Comics Category of the First Philippine Fiction Graphic Awards hosted by Fully Booked in 2006, and is included in “Expeditions: The 1st Philippine Graphic/Fiction Compilation” which was launched last November 2007. Recently, her entry to the Second Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards, entitled "Roses in Exchange for a Heart," was awarded as part of the short list of finalists and is bound to be included once again in the second compilation of winning entries.

She has been part of group art exhibitions which includes the Bantay-Kalikasan Finalists Art Exhibit at Power Plant Mall in 2004, Epson Photo Imaging Exposition: 200 Best Images 2005 at the Shangri-la Mall Art Space, and the recently concluded Signatures of Change: Group Art Exhibition at Big Sky Mind Gallery-Café (2007).

Future shows
Pallon has an ongoing mini-exhibit at Toasted in Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall (Cainta, Rizal). Alongside two other female artists, she will be exhibiting her newest paintings on the upcoming Ev(e)olution of F.A.M.E. (Female Artists’ and Musicians’ Evolution) at Porch Katipunan on the 17th. The latter is a revolutionary exclusive for women event wherein multi-talented women come together in a night of music, poetry & art. On the 15th of December she will once again be joining another group exhibition for Lunduyan ng Sining (translated as Sanctuary of Art), a group of young and active women-loving women that aims to address lesbian issues and advocacies. She is set to have her first major solo exhibit in 2008.
