| About the Artist |
The Cannibal Debutante:
I found a old cookbook from the 1950s with wonderful illustrations of women in wasp-waisted dresses serving food to their families. Many of them, including the one on the cover, which was my original inspiration, had charmingly sly looks on their faces as though to say, "I may look like the sweet and obedient wife, but really I slipped something perfectly horrible into your jello salad."
I began a series of drawings that evolved into a pop-up book and some prints
that expand upon this theme. I've basically made all the food these coy women are serving contain human remains.
Cannibal Debutantes are women who on the surface appear to fit perfectly into the mold of ideal femininity. However, through subtle twists of character, speech and action they slice the stereotype to ribbons.
Barcode Bondage Babies:
A found advertisement, 2003 - "Loving, Married, SANE, stable and reliable professional couple (not an agency) seeks egg donor. Candidate must be healthy, non-smoker, 18 to 25 and willing to meet briefly with prospective parents. Caucasian, blonde, red or light brown hair, 5'6"+, slim and very pretty. Proven academic achievement, SAT score 1300+. Outgoing, sense of humor, organized. Interest in art or architecture a pluse. Very generous compensation."
