“My paintings represent an ongoing quest to understand the human psyche and to reveal that which cannot be expressed with words. I strive to tap into the natural creative energy that is shared by and connects all living things and transfer this onto the canvas; my work is intended to be as subtly nourishing and enriching to my viewers as it is to me. Every time I start a new painting, I take a leap of faith to allow this creative energy to flow through me and the paint, and to communicate something vital to the viewer -- without naturalistic imagery or symbols, but rather with pure visual form, like music.”
Leanne’s ongoing studies in Jungian psychology, dream analysis, meditation, mandala drawing and the I Ching have perhaps had the most profound influence on her abstract paintings as she uses the language of paint to resonate with these concepts.
A native of Ontario, Canada, Leanne began her life as an artist while training as a classical pianist with the Royal Conservatory of Music. This was followed by her studies and career in mechanical engineering which paradoxically accompanied her ongoing interest in the psyche and the emotional connection to physical illness.
Following her intuition, and desiring to get back to a freer and more creative lifestyle, she took a huge leap of faith, leaving her engineering career behind, and moved to Italy where she lived, worked and created art for 7 years, painting and studying ceramics with a master ceramicist.
She then moved to Austin and, continuing to be fascinated by the human psyche and its connection to physical illness, completed graduate work in acupuncture, Shiatsu and Japanese Five Element psychology and started a successful healing practice treating women challenged with cancer. Throughout all this she continued to create her art until she finally realized her artwork was the language through which she was able to communicate most effectively what she had gleaned from her years of self-study.
She continued her painting education through the University of Texas at Austin and the Austin Museum of Art, Laguna Gloria campus as well as a considerable amount of independent study. She also trained extensively with the internationally renowned sculptor and ceramicist, Ishmael Soto.
Leanne now paints and creates ceramics full time in her Austin studio at Pump Project Art Complex.
Since beginning to show her work publicly in December 2006, her paintings have been met with widespread appreciation as well as international awards and recognition.
One of her recent collectors commented, “There is always something new and fresh to be perceived in these paintings, as if they are a doorway into some aspect of the world which we normally ignore.”

| 关于此艺术家 |
Throughout my lifetime, I’ve been fascinated by the human psyche. My ongoing studies in Jungian psychology, dream interpretation, Eastern philosophy, numerous types of alternative medicine, the I Ching and mandala drawing as well as my active meditation practice have served to answer many of my own personal questions in understanding this realm.
Jung describes the ‘collective unconscious’ as the ‘reservoir of the experiences of our species’ and I first discovered this realm while studying classical piano at a very early age. While playing, I often had the experience of the music playing through me rather than myself playing the piano and I would experience a sensation of deep inter-connectedness with this ‘greater consciousness’. Now, through meditation and my artwork, it is easier for me to access this feeling, but to articulate the experience in simple words continues to be nearly impossible. So, it is through my painting that I find a language and vocabulary to express some of what I’ve gleaned – including an indisputable feeling that all living things (the planet included) are inter-connected and inseparable.
When I begin an abstract painting, I have no attachment to (and usually no idea of) the final outcome. I relax into a meditative state and step completely out of the way of my ego to allow whatever wants to be expressed through the language of the oil paint. It’s up to the viewer to interpret what is revealed on the canvas -- and each person is permitted to take away a message that is completely personal to him or her.
"If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite." -- William Blake |
