| About the Artist |
I am always looking for new ways in which to explore my creativity. The fluidity of melding powdered pigments with solvent based paints on aluminium suits my love of representing inner states and outer forms (like the sea). While some of my paintings can be quite representational, or look a bit like something real, the truth is, I want the viewer to see what they will; and, actually, to complete my art.

Lilith
2009 Paint, powdered pigments, solvents on aluminium 61cms square unframed |
|
In Jewish folklore, God created Lilith from the same dust as Adam, so she refused to submit to him.
She may be taken as a symbol of oppressed womanhood, but she is also known as "The Howling One".
She can been seen as the feminine, dark side of the divine; she occurs through many mythologies in different guises. |

If You Touch My Shadow
2009 Paint, powdered pigments, solvents on aluminium 61cms x 81cms |
|
A reflection on water; if you touch it you will break it, for it has no substance of its own.
It reflects something real, but is not real. Also, it is an image (my painting) of an image (a photograph) of an image (on water). |

A Man Of Sorrows
2009 Paint, powdered pigments, solvents on glass 50cms x 55cms |
|
At a performance of Handel's Messiah, I was entranced by the air "He was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief." It made me cry, and I remained haunted by it, wondering how I could paint the musical experience. It was still in my mind a few days later in the Barber Institute in Birmingham University when I saw Orazio's 17th century marble relief of "The Man of Sorrows", a tearful face, which made me think of painting a portrait. I was struck by the synchronicity.
