Expectant

Expectant
This painting, made exclusively with computer software, is a self-portrait that I painted during a period of my life filled with emotional upheaval - rife with anxieties and expectations of what my life would hold for me next.

The Calm After the Storm
A digital painting of the calm after a terribly delicious storm with lots of lightning and thunder that I had the pleasure of witnessing on a road trip across the country to California a few years ago. It was pitch black in the middle of the day and when we came over the hill there was this glory of golden sunshine lighting up the sky like the heavens had opened.

The Eye of Pele

© 2006
Digital Painting
50 cm x 70 cm

Pele is the goddess of fire, lightning, volcanoes, dance, and violence - and is known for her violent temper. Though usually appearing as a young, beautiful woman or elderly lady in most stories, when angered the Goddess Pele is said to appear in part aflame or as a pure flame. The Goddess Pele resides at Mauna Kea, on the Island of Hawai'i, fiercely protecting her Hawai'ian people. Most famously, Pele is known for her all-seeing omniscience, in cursing any visitors to her islands who might remove the volcanic rock from her homeland. Each year hundreds of pieces of lava rock are sent back to Hawai'i from around the world from people who claim to have experienced horrible misfortune from Pele's wrath since removing the rocks, accompanied by missives asking for her forgiveness.

Fiery Dreams

© 2006
Digital Painting
80 cm x 25 cm

"There are no good girls gone wrong, just bad girls found out." - Mae West It's an encore to "The Eye of Pele" and I couldn't resist trying to depict the dichotomy of the fiery goddess within us all and the calm and quiet angels we appear to be whilst sleeping... despite what we may be dreaming of.

The Light of Creation

© 2006
Digital Painting
70 cm x 50 cm

According to the Torah, when God gifted the Earth with light, the light of creation shone for thirty-six hours and in Kabbalah, the epiphany of "creation" is termed ohr aiyn sof, which means "the appearance of God's light." This picture depicts what it may have been like to witness the dawning of those first hours, reaching forth to touch the intangible.

Torment

© 2007
Digital Painting
50 cm x 50 cm

I believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God, but he was also part "man" and he struggled with decisions, just like the rest of us do. Anyone that is going to argue that Jesus was perfect and never made mistakes, nor ever struggled with his path has clearly not read history books, nor the Bible (even if you were to take it as infallible). Sexuality is an important theme, especially in religion. I feel it is important to discuss it openly. I hope this piece encourages thought and respectful discussion. Finally, I believe that Jesus Christ had to address his own sexuality, just like everyone else does at some point in their lives. Even if you don't believe the historians who have documented important clues that likely point to the fact that Jesus Christ did marry (probably the woman known as Mary Magdalene) and likely had children, he still had to address it... even priests and nuns do... to at least consider their physical needs and to decide what to do (or not to do) about them.
