I collect athletic shoes as art objects. Being someone who supports contemporary shoe subculture, I endorse trainers as a valid art form. Equally influential is my own experience of partly growing up in Manila, Philippines, where the value and cost relationship of shoes mimic that of art. During the process of hunting for my sneaker collection through eBay, I encountered the need to acknowledge the independent significance of shoeboxes. Original boxes are necessary to intensify the allure of such a collectible. I find this to be a Minimalist gesture in essence and strategy, like in Carl Andre’s method of purified object veneration. My objective in these paintings has been to align with such connections.
