M J Illingworth

About the Artist

My paintings are based on sketches, photos and memory;
places, events, and life. Music provides the additional dimension.

The music is used to let different emotions and feelings arise. I then tune into this as I paint. The result is a sense of movement in my work.

“I hear, I feel, I paint.”

Music opens up different parts of our personality. As an artist I am no different, and am confident to reflect this with variation in my style.

“Meaningful abstraction” is sometimes used to describe my paintings. My art embraces the audio and visual waves of energy that are present in our everyday lives. The art produced is the output at the end of each audio journey.

The art is not the music or the journey; it is the visual experience resulting from the mixture of the two.

Each artwork contains aspects to resonate with the viewer.

Education and biography
In his 20s "Illy" discovered that colours, shapes and forms easily came to mind when listening to music. He then went on to train in visualisation and meditation techniques, that enabled him to deepen his understanding of the effects of colour and sound on the mind.

This self-taught and full-time artist is a member of The Society of Scottish Artists.

Born in Lancashire, and guided by a Scottish school art teacher over 20 years ago, he now lives in the Scottish Borders.

In the past year, Illy has exhibited twelve times in the UK and his work has reached as far as Holland. Illy’s is now holding his 3rd solo exhibition.
