Marika Borlase

About the Artist

In her latest body of work Marika Borlase turns her wry visual imagery toward an examination of contemporary culture and its obsession with fame. Using heightened colour and a complex overlay of patterns uber-chic figures parade amidst a heady world of classical architecture. In a context reminiscent of Rococo excess, these works mirror western society’s materialistic mania.

Kylie, Kate Moss and Australian sporting legend Don Bradman have literally been placed on pedestals, frozen in their iconic form. These posed and self aware figures appear as though sleepwalking through a very public life and could be read as props or aspiration mantels rather than as individuals.

Flat areas of color range from decorator pastels to acid hues, and are deployed in the non naturalistic mode that television and printed media uses to indicate a hallucinatory interlude. These flat areas of colour are further embellished with an added layer of airbrushed grids, pixels or patterns to add to the sense of colour vibrancy and detail. Colours borrowed from the make-believe world of comics or from interior decorating colour scheme charts deliver an ambivalent setting that is as radiant as it is disorientating.

These complex environments are reinforced by a compositional pandemonium and two-dimensionality suggestive of Lichtenstein’s later work. Through the layering of images from different contexts and time frames, Borlase is investigating the terrain of collective culture. These works ask questions about the meaning of being an individual in a world bombarded with images of success, from the subtly personal to the overtly commercial.
