| Marilyn Fenn |
| |
|
Born Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Grew up in Dallas, TX; lives in Austin, TX.
Marilyn Fenn started painting in her crib and hasn't stopped since. She earned a degree in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has explored a variety of subject matter ranging from representational landscapes and still lifes to vibrant abstractions -- and many points in between. Their common thread is an unerring sense of color, and a constant celebration of how paint inhabits a surface.
Lately she has been using encaustic, a wax-based painting medium, to create near-abstract imagery based on energetic phenomena such as tornadoes, hurricanes and atomic explosions. She continues exploring total abstraction in both encaustic and oils.
Marilyn's work has been exhibited in Chicago and Texas and can often be seen at various shows in the Austin area and at her studio during the East Austin Studio Tour or by appointment.

| About the Artist |
My paintings are paint first, and images second.
Color and form are the two primary concerns of my work.
My paintings may be purely abstract or may use imagery drawn from science and nature, or from the social and political realms. Much of my work deals with images of energy unleashed; however, I am in fact challenging the viewer to look beyond their potential first response at the subjects being referenced to the beauty that's right before their eyes -- the colors and shapes of paint. |

Succession Series -
2008 Oil on 20 Canvases 121.92 x 152.4 cm |
|
This work is made up of twenty 12"x12" (30.48cm x 30.48cm) panels. The process of creating each new work evolved from the previous work. The first panel was the seed for the whole series, with each new panel unfolding from an edge of the previous panel, yet with the freedom for each new panel to go in a different direction than the one before.
Many of the individual panels in this series were inspired by patterns of different scales in the natural world – from molecules to ice sheets to nebulae. The 20 panels are mounted on a barced piece of plywood, the total size is 121.92 x 152.4 cm (4 x 5 feet) |
