Marlis Albrecht

|
born 1956 in Ludwigsburg, Germany
1987-1988 Art Academy Stuttgart (Freie Kunstschule Stuttgart)
since 1989 lives and works as a full time artist in Moeglingen, Germany

About the Artist
For about 15 years Marlis Albrecht has been using beeswax and pigments. In developing her work she takes the utmost care in the creative process to establish her grounds. The artist uses warm layers of beeswax, colored with pigments, to prime the raw wooden panels. In parts wax tempera is added and worked in.
Through incising and scratching away the layers, the thickness and density of the material, due to the working process, gets broken up and reduced. Layers underneath are revealed and visible again.
The artist regards this process as similar to psychological occurrences and human relationships.
These are the topics Marlis Albrecht has committed herself to.
Her figures serve as projection screens to show ambiguous games of presence and absence, devotion and avoidance.
Only at the surface does she imitate unity.
Every painting is a hypothesis, engaging the audience in permanent questioning and search for different interpretations .
This dialogical work gets us tangled in the process of complex perception and forces us in a very subjective way to trace interpersonal sentiments.
The paintings narrate psychic scenes of existential experiences: lust, longing for love, security, frustrations and the mechanisms to handle them, the fear of human beings regarding their fellow human beings or their own inabilities.
This all happens in an ironic, humorous, and poetic way- never being voyeuristic, intrusive, or accusing.
A silent art that deals with the contradictions of life and the enmeshment of happiness and grief.
