Inspired by specific locations, I research heavily before I begin to take pictures. My work moves from outdoors to indoors, from film to digital, from state of the art to toy camera. I have photographed used landscapes, from the valleys left in the wake of the collapsed Welsh mining industry -- to the scarred beaches of India’s scraps yards, I am looking to reveal the presence of history in the contemporary landscape. My images are neither abstract nor document but spur the viewer to dwell on both the absence and presence, they evoke the sense of loss and omission. Ambiguities of scale resonate with emptiness as we revel in pure looking. New color work deals with landscapes of leisure. |
