Martin Roth’s most recent work replaces the classical techniques of paint and a brush with a more contemporary and relevant tool – the price gun.

In his series of “Poster Remixes,” price tags intrude and inhabit the faces, bodies and spirits of some of America’s most celebrated icons. The cult of the personality, in some ways the life blood of the culture, gets transformed, with Roth’s intercession, by the cult of price tag.

Established cultural meaning, which may in itself be a form of disguise, is trumped by Roth’s creative use of the price tag. Examining the obsessive nature of consumerism in the United States with consciousness and craft, Roth obliterates accepted notions of what is meaningful with a meaningfulness all his own.

Using the same tools, techniques and vision as in his “Poster Remixes,” Roth has created landscapes whose centers are enriched by the density of price tags from which they are made.
Roth has created these stunning aerial views using just the price gun and the price tag. At a distance these work look like surveillance photos caught on the fly. Only on closer inspection does the physicality of the work reveal itself. As in life, as in real estate - the higher ground has a greater value than the lowlands.

This work has the quality of pointillist paintings, in that they only begin to be revealed by standing at a distance and then moving up close.
