Michael Dixon

About the Artist

I am predominantly a figurative painter but have also ventured into performance art and video art. As a bi-racial person of color, I explore the personal, societal, and aesthetic struggles of belonging to both "white" and "black" racial and cultural identities, yet simultaneously belonging fully to neither. The works of artists such as Robert Colescott, Beverly McIver, Michael Ray Charles, Glenn Ligon, and Kerry James Marshall have influenced my work. The content of my work is concerned with perceptions of bi-racial identity as it relates to “whiteness”, “blackness”, and “otherness”. These identities are fluid and racialized. They are all subject to, and defined by, a dominant “white” culture. Some of the symbols and methods that I use in the paintings to qualify these experiences of a fluid bi-racial identity include blackface and whiteface.
