| About the Artist |
I'm a multidisciplinary artist, but the last few years I have been working mainly in the field of video art, but I donât want to use this as a label to define myself. I believe the most important thing being an artist is to have freedom of the thinking and it is not so important which media you use to express your ideas.
My task as an artist is to look through the cover of things in their real essence, to find the real value of the ideas, which make the world, goes round. For me it is interesting to work in a border between the cultures, which are not so visible in those complex, sometimes contradictory times of globalization. To provoke the people to see how of front of their own eyes their own world is changing, because of the influence of the diversity of nowadays cultures. For me the art is a form of communication with other people and the artist has in his/ her hands the art as a weapon, in which the opportunity to provoke and change the thinking of the others is hidden. In a same time I believe â there is an art â a pure art, which the artists make for their own spiritual development and to find the divine essence in their selves. This understanding of the art is a way of life and a way of thinking with no commercial value.
The art is my way to be free.

CYLINDER
2007 video instalation dementions variable |
|
A toy-train is moving continuously in a circle, in which there is a fixed cylinder. The cylinder has such dimensions that its height equals the circle diameter. A small video-camera is mounted in to the toy-train. It is presenting continuously the image of the cylinder in wireless way. The image is projected on one of the walls in the room where the installation will be positioned. As a result of the specific cylinder dimensions, toy-train motion and specific camera position, the image is changing in such way that at certain time intervals, the cylinder is seen either as a circle or as a square only.
The continuously changing world is woven from infinite manifestation of the two cosmic forces of creative energy, Ying and Yan, which flow smoothly one into the other.
The author offers a simple example of the flowing of Ying and Yan by presenting the shifting of the square into a circle. With that he is paying his tribute to eastern philosophers and to Kazimir Malevic. The image is from my solo exhibition in Hidamari gallery in Sapporo, Japan, February 2007. |
DEEP SILENCE
2006 video instalation dementions variable |
|
Physical Description:
A video image of a naked silent man, lying still under the sea level, is screened into the floor. The man is shot from above (above the water) so that the refraction of the image, caused by the water motion, could be seen. It is necessary the image to be as large as the projected man in his full size.
Brief Description or Sort of a Concept:
An eager fan of the âSermon with Flowerâ delivered by Buddha, i.e. the author, Neno Belchev, is interested in every form of silence â in terms of a road, or a way how to follow that road, and finally in terms of an artist - he is interested in silence as a form of influence.
In this Project, he follows partly the hesychasts (quietists) - followers of the maxim: âIn order that you can hear, you must be silent!â The hesychasts took a vow to keep silent, which they
kept up during all their lifetime, or over a definite period of time. Similarly, Neno takes a vow to keep silent; sinking deeply in an environment, where one cannot but keep silent.
Neno Belchev has a profound respect for all mystics dedicated to spiritual self-excellence, and he sincerely wishes to be like them but for unknown reasons he fails to be alike and admits this with a smile on his face.
This Project is the outcome of that smile. The image is from my solo exhibition in Hidamari gallery in Sapporo, Japan, February 2007. |

to move the hingers of your feet in Bulgarian language means - DO NOTHING. But in Eastern philosophy there is a spesiphic term - DOING WITHOUT DOING. This is my expirience to do Art without Doing. The image is from my solo exhibition in "Georgi Velchev" gallery in Varna,Bulgaria, April 2007. |

2006 -2007 installation from 3000 drawings the entire space of the gallery |
|
This image is from the exhibition in "8" gallery in Varna, Bulgaria, May 2007, which was the second part of the project âSee how the Bulgarian does art!â. There in gallery â8â Iâve presented an installation made by 3000 drawing. Some of them were part from this similar installation, which Iâve made in Japan. Some of drawing Iâve made with unconscious mind or in mechanic way, but other Iâve made with a very special idea. Iâve mixed them and have represented them in completely and extremely dark space of the gallery. The spectators had to see them with support of flashlights. They were traveling in the dark space of my unconscious mind. |

The Stone With A Heart
2006 video installation 65 / 35 / 25 |
|
Brief description:
Over the stone with bizarre shape is implanted monitor, on which is visible beating heart.
Concept:
Neno Belchev aims to rehabilitate the stone in the eyes of society and to erase from the social consciousness the expression âa man of stony heartâ. He, alike the ancient people, perceives the world as being spiritualized and believes that stone has a heart and soul. In order to show to the world that this is just how matters stand, a stone sacrifices âhimselfâ and allows Neno Belchev to impair âhisâ integrity and to âimplantâ in it a screen, where the stone heart can be seen. |
CompBat
2006 video-art |
|
These are 6 frames from video "Comp Bat", which we made together with 3REC group in the summer of 2006.
Description:
A video-documentation of the game, which the three authors are playing against each other, are screened on three monitors simultaneously as the image of each screen is divided in two parts. In one of the partitions, the face of one of the gamer is shown, and in the other partition - the progress of his game. Initially, the authors are playing a modern computer game linked in a net, and afterwards â a game, which runs in the real space. The video material has been looped.
Concept:
In the age of increasing alienation, the authors are investigating the contemporary technologies, like a medium giving an opportunity to other kind of communications.
In the intercourse with other people, man is always trying to build before them an image of himself, which is not real, but through which his true nature is seen. The computer game gives us such an image â ready and formal, in which the gamer feels protected and anonymous. It gives him power to feel so free and unconsciously to manifest himself through his actions in the game.
Only for a comparison, the 3REC group offers to the spectator documentation of a game in a real space. The 3REC group gives him a choice to judge on what he wants to focus his mind: on differences or on resemblances. |
IMMIGRATION IN SUITCASE
2008 video-installation and performance dementions variable |
|
description:
In the space of the gallery a very small and old red car is with open luggage-carrier, in which is visible a
suitcase. In the suitcase there is an alive man in embryonic position, who is the author of the project â
Neno. Inside the suitcase is based video-camera, which broadcasts TV signal with the support of a
transmitter. The image of the sweating and suffering man in very uncomfortable position of the body in very
tight space is received by the multimedia projector (beamer) and it is projected on a wall of the gallery.conception:
For different reasons, outcast from their native born places, a lot of people take long and dangerous
journeys with the purpose to find better place for living. Many of them die during the way, traveling in
suitcases, luggage-carrier and containers. Neno makes this research, to realize to which point some people
are ready to go to immigrate in other country. What is the value of the emigration? And what is the value of
the âgoodâ life? The author desires (needs) to identify himself with them and to make the spectators put
themselves in the place of the immigrants and to feel their suffering. Neno believes that there are a lot of
people, who help the immigrants, but he also believes that this is not enough. Not the governments, which
accept them, but rather the governments, which make them go abroad, have to think on this problem,
because the main reason for immigration is not the availability of good conditions in some countries but the
absence of same conditions in some other countries.
Neno feels himself close to this theme, because before years he had a friend, who immigrated in Germany
in a suitcase.Neno has taken a part in 2008 yearâs edition of REDline, which is framed by the ideas of community, identity and representation. With a
particular focus on the public space and public art, Bordering on Us is a project that wishes to produce a
discussion on the strategies art has to occupy the public space and how it deals and relates with the
passer-by.

Pendulum
2008 video-installation dementions variable |
|
Synopsis:
The image of a man hanged head below, making motions, which are very similar to the motions of the pendulum, is projected to the wall of the gallery. The top line of the image is coincided with the top line of the wall, between the wall and the roof.
Conception:
There in no conception, but those motions like pendulum in their own nature are deep into the nature of the author. He feels pain in his backbone since his childhood and this is one of the ways to make this pain decrease. In other hand he often throws by one extreme to other extreme same like a pendulum.

Silicon Identity - P Hands

âTo touch the world with other hands, to step on the earth with other feetâ
In the entire human history the gloves, socks and other dresses were hiding the human hands, feet and bodies. Now is the time for them to show our hands and feet. Neno gives them this unique opportunity. What was inside will go outside!
But the most important is that some people have a dream to make mark, âto leave their footprintsâ into the history or in the art, but they havenât requested skills to do that. Actually everybody makes material or immaterial signs in this life, but some people donât realize that and they have the need to identify themselves with the signs of other people. They want to make same steps like some other. Now Neno gives to these people the opportunity âto leave same footprintsâ as some very famous artist or rock-star or to have same bottom as some famous model. This is also opportunity for those, who are seeking experimenters, just to feel something different. |

Rhapsody Bulgaria (A Car With Seven Pickaxes)
2009 video-installation, ready made and performance dementions variable |
|
Concept:
________________________________________
More than 30 different cases of pickaxes imbedded in luxurious cars have been recorded in Bulgaria since 2005. It is claimed this is a patent of the Bulgarian mafia along the Black Sea coast, constituting a message to the owner of the car meaning âWe have accounts to settle with you!â. Others think some of the dozens of assaults were not made by the mafia but by ordinary people seeking justice that they did not find in court, but this cannot be proved.
Using a car with pickaxes imbedded in it simply as a form in combination with video documentation, the video installation presented charges this metaphor with different meaning and connotation. Using the problems in todayâs Bulgarian society as a base, its objective is to face visitors with conundrums. In the present complex and contradictory times, when the value of humane ideas has been changed , it is not the job of the artist to give easy answers. Every observer will find a different meaning in this video installation and that is precisely what is important today, when pluralism is of enormous importance for the development of both art and society as a whole.
Different documentary video interviews are broadcast simultaneously on the TV screens , ones that were filmed during a hitchhike trip though the countries from South-eastern to Central Europe (in the summer of - http://www.rhiz.eu/article-28317-en.html ) and in which the drivers share their opinion of the European Union and Bulgariaâs membership in it. ________________________________________
One of the major problems facing Bulgaria is the existence of a mafia and structures similar to it in every single sphere of society, which also reflects on the international attitude towards the country and on Bulgariaâs relations with the European Union.
