Nezaket Ekici

About the Artist

Artist Statement: Nezaket Ekici

The idea, the thought, the draft are the bases for the execution of my artwork. Ideas come from everyday life situations, social and cultural atmospheres. Then the idea expresses itself in the performances and installation art. As well as this, I use the body as a means of expression.

The artistic idea is expressed using the body alone, as part of the installation and within the context of an audience.

The subjects I deal with are time, movement, space, material, body, action/interaction. I try to create works of art that leave for the viewer, free space for associations and new possibilities. I take a special situation from everyday life and without illustrating this one for one; I place it into a new context.

I aim to create art where all of the elements are connected together to form a whole work of art ( Gesamtkunstwerk)

“Inafferrabile/ Greifbar Fern”

Performance

The Artist (Nezaket Ekici) stands with the back to the viewer, in an created red colored room, with a wedding dress 8 meters long and 6-meter width. She tries to pull up desperately in Sisyphus work the long zipper in the back. Because the dress is closely sewed on purpose in the sleeve, shoulder and hip, it will be impossible to come up with the zipper. By using microphones, the noises of the zipper and breathing become audible. During 30 minutes, the viewer is torn whether he should help or not. In the end the Artist stops undone things with an open back and leaves the room with her long train Performance presented for the exibition 2yk Galerie Kunstfabrik am Flutgraben e.V., Berlin 10.9 – 8.10.2004 Equipment: Bridal dress, 2 func microphones, mixer, sound system, boxes, red space Duration of the Performance: 30 Minuten Camera: Andreas Dammertz

„Fountain“ Blue

2004
Photoedition/
70x100 cm Lambda Print of Aludipond/ 12 different Motives

A photo edition has been made of the performance Fountain. First in a business lobby and secondly in a theatre in Berlin. Looking onto the architectoral language, these places are the very opposite to each other: the first - right angles, blue painted walls and sandstone colored Walls made of glazed tiles. The second one -architecture of the twenties of the past century building elegance and Pomp around the people. These places attach value to very different social philosophies: the first one diskusses recent capitalism with all its potential for crisis and the second one, in the theatre of the people serves a almost naive Reminizienz to former times than it is a basis for provocation. The two Photo Editions of Fountain “pomp” and “blue” reflect the penetration of place and art. Photo: by A.R. Jenchen

„Nobles Opak“

2005
Performance

Although Schiele was initially influenced by the work of Gustav Klimt, he soon developed his own anticlassical style which emphasized hidden (spiritual) feelings rahter than aesthetics. This performance represents the similarities and differences between these two artists’ ideas about Love and Death. The costume and decor derives from Klimt, who used many black-and-white patterns. The extreme expressions, grimaces and physical poses derive from Schiele. Presented at: Schiele / Abramovic / De Châtel and IPG "Persistent and Gradual Loss of Self-Control" Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam 25.3-19.6.2005 "Nobles Opak" vom 12.5-18.5.2005 Equipment: black and white costume (original design of Klimt), black colour, shelf (70 cm x 200 cm) Duration: 6 days each 8 hour 1 day 12 hour Photo by Andreas Dammertz

„Living Spot“

2005
Performance

“The performance "Living spot" takes place on the 5th flour of a business building. The area for the performance serves normally as a passage area. The front side is glass. The area is filled up to the cover with white ballons. the artist dressed in business style let More than 1500 ballons burst by using hands, feet and the whole body. Only aid is a pencil. The area, which remains inconspicuous in the office everyday life, is now noticed in a new way by the artist and the viewers: visually, accustically and haptically. The balloons are quasi empty cases. The area is doubled and reflects itselve in this renewed filling from air (its own air), in small spatial units. Units, partitionings by breath-thin and high-tension diaphragm. The respiratory volume of the area did not change. No new air was brought in or taken away and anyhow the subject cannot breathe any longer.” Performance presented for the exibition “Kunst am Bau”, GASAG, Berliner Gaswerke Aktiengesellschaft, Berlin 28.1.2005 Equipment: 1500 white ballons, amplifier, Soundmixer, 4 Boxes, 4 microphones, headset microphone, costüme Duration of the Performance: 45 minutes Camera: Andreas Dammertz

„My Pig“

2004
Photoedition
2x 60x120cm/ Lambdaprints of Aludipond

The red of the leash functions as a mark of a taboo break and is an expression of the unusual unification of a severely Muslim dressed woman with an animal (a pig) understood according to the “koran” as unclean. But the pig is only an innocent living being and has earned our acknowledgment like each other being. Photo by Rüdiger Lubricht

„Hullabelly“

2002
Video Performance

In the Video Performance „Hullabelly“ the artist, veiled by a headscarf, in trousers and skirt, a hula-hoop to Oriental belly dance music. She uses only her head to rotate the hoop. DVD PAL, 2 min. Loop Equipment: Sound equipment, hula-hoops, Turkish belly dancing music Video still, Camera by Susanne Winterling

"I had a dream..."

2003
Performance

For the performance “I Had a Dream….” a 1m x 15m roll of grass is laid out. The artist mows the lawn with her teeth. A camera installed at the end of the lawn shows close-ups of the action on monitors installed in the adjoining room. The audience is at first not able to determine whether they are viewing a recording or a live transmission Presented at “Kunstvereine – 6 Standorte”, Laga, Federal Flower Show, Gronau-Losser, Flower Hall, 2003 Equipment: 15-metre-stretch of grass, pedestal, monitors, video recorder, camera Duration of the Performance: 3 hour Camera: Andreas Dammertz Photos by Cora Wruck

Nazar

2006
Photoedition
60x120 cm/ 12 different Motives/ Lambda Print of Aludibond

The Fotoedition Nazar presents a dress made of "blue glass eyes", which are known in Orient as a talisman against bad looks. The dress consists of 600 glass-eyes which weigh more than 30 kg. The dress has two meanings. On the one hand, the dress protects against bad looks and expresses majesty over the evel itself. On the other hand the "blue eye" does not appear as a simple symbol against evil, but as a functional element of an everyday subject. The foto edition emphasizes the fetish charakter of the "blue eye" and compensates this inquisition with noble beauty in it appearence. The foto edition derives from the Performance with the same name "Nazar". Foto by Cetin Özer
