Nicholas Hutcheson

About the Artist

Nicholas Hutcheson's work has always examined structures, the passage of time and perception as well as the process of drawing itself.

Initially this took the form of a series of personal plans interpreting refineries, silos and plants man-made structures in the environment. Extensive travels in South America brought him into contact with the mummified remains of people, which began a shift from industrial structures to the organic ones of human form, continuing on arrival in Australia with remains of animals and trees. Early pieces construct interior landscapes from vestiges of skin, bone and bark. Subsequent work comprised an investigation into the seemingly random strata of shed eucalypt bark, and of masses of driftwood and uprooted trees washed downstream and onto a beach.

Recent practice includes a 6 week residency at Bundanon Australia, former home of the artist Arthur Boyd , which resulted in large scale (1.5m x 3.5m) drawings on paper interpreting the landscape.

Through the process of drawing, Nicholas try to develop an understanding of the seemingly random and chaotic.
