Nicola Anthony

About the Artist

My work is concerned with materiality, detail, repetition and pattern. I am inspired by organic structures and fragility, through which I look at themes such as memory and identity. My working method involves the organisation of many small pieces into a complex but delicate entirety.

My most recent works are the 'I find myself looking at you' series: The artwork spreads across an expanse of clear resin encapsulating drawings and personal statements that define us. The work aims to connect with the viewer by being striking from a distance but intricately detailed upon closer examination, revealing the daily highs and lows of life. We become aware of the text only when close to the surfaces; the artwork is revealing to us a secret...viewers often recognise aspects of themselves in the work.

"AstraZeneca first prize commission winner 2006" A commissioned piece for pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca with a stronger focus on biology and identity. click here for article about the commission Consisting of small resin cells, revealing the daily highs and lows of life, and engaging vision as a close sense; a sense of touch.

Sugar Cube Room

June 2006
50,000 sugar cubes and cube faces, Installation view
240 x 240 x 240 cm

Sugar Cube Room was a room swathed in sugar cubes, incorporating text and whispered voices. It was made up of 50,000 sugar cubes and cube faces, which developed into a mosaic of stata patterns twisting and spreading across the four walls of the space, and built up in places to 5 or 6 layers. see Sugar Cube Room in issue 4 of CreatureMag, 'what is this space?' [click here] Sugar was kindly donated by The Tate Britain, Tate & Lyle, Waitrose, Tescos Loughborough Branch, and Imago Services. The subtle but powerful abundance of simple materials creates complexity and depth, a contrast to the sensory exclusion of the ‘white cube’ space. I use tactile, redolent spaces to inspire the senses. I try not to make work which is easily resolved by the mind. If it is not instantly absorbed it can stimulating imagination and creativity, whilst at the same time it is easy for the body and senses to relate to. I use text in a small font winding sentences in and out of the sugar cubes; I make large spaces composed of small components; and also play very subtle whispered texts through the walls. This is to draw the viewer in so that the encounter is an intimate one where you have to get in close to the surface, close enough to smell the sugar and sense it on your tongue. Sugar Cube (1 of 3)

Feb 2006
Sugar, concrete, text
38 x 38 x 38cm

The Sugar Cubes Sculptures concern materiality and aesthetic experience. Sensory materials constitute work with a tactile quality, and contrasting materials, which may evoke associations and reminiscences. The molten sugar could be compared with amber; sharing the characteristics of preserving, capturing, encapsulating and containing. It draws parallels with the concept of memory, and raises questions about whether histories and memories are properly preserved or whether, more realistically, they are subject to change and deterioration, some parts clear, others obscured.

Sugar Wall

2005
Sugar, text, mixed media
200 x 200cm

Sugar Wall was a two metre squared wall cast entirely from sugar, with sections of text printed on the surface. As an external installation it was ever changing in organic ways, engageing the sense of smell, taste and touch as well as being visually arresting, encapsulating the passing of time.
