| About the Artist |
Our daily lives conceal a whole range of absurd and grotesque objects, images and situations, which become fixed in our minds, often without our realising it. In transforming them in the form of photographs, videos or objects from the everyday into a new, artistic context, I attempt to bring out their absurdity. Through this type of transformation and deliberate manipulation, the viewer is made aware once again of these objects and their grotesque elements.
Often I use the human body as a starting point. I use the body because we confront it every day; we define ourselves through our bodies; it is what the outside world sees of us and it is constantly changing.
I work primarily in video as most of my ideas are based on moving images. Using digital techniques enables me to process and alter the material in many different ways. I work with a combination of photographs, videos and 3-D material.
Often the video is connected to another piece of work, for example one or more objects or other videos. In this way I develop from a video to an installation which fills the room.
As a rule I work simultaneously on several projects which for me are interconnected.
My work contains references to contemporary and future society and I develop theories which I present to the viewer. My aim is to bring together absurdity and the credibility of the theory, playing with fascination, revulsion and curiosity.

Joana

“Joana” was displayed in Hamburg in February of 2005.
Joana is a half real and half virtual woman. I designed a city model and projected her into the model as a representative.
She speaks a text about the virtual city in the net and compares it to the physically real city.
The subject of her text is the development of a competitive relationship between these two cities that influences both present-day and future architecture.
Buildings with glass facades as well as megalopolises come into existence.
She goes on to explain that these structures lead to an irritation of the masses, which consequently leads to them losing their own physical form and trying to reconstruct it in their home computers. The result is isolation.
The model is constructed of plexiglass on a scale of 1:1000.
It is based on the concept of Le Corbusier’s “The Machine for Living.”
My model comprises a city district in a building complex.
The inhabitants work, live and go to school in the same building.
Recreation is also integrated. There are movie theaters, parks, swimming pools, businesses and sports facilities in the building.
There is no longer any reason to leave home.

Mikrosoft-meat

This video installation consists of three parts, an object, three photographs and a video projection. The video projection shows a life sized digital woman. She speaks a text in which she describes the new body of the 21st century with its many advantages.
She tries to take away people’s fear of a new, “improved” body, which is more reliable, more practical, and more attractive, and which exists in a whole new environment.
The three classically framed photographs show three animal families that seem alive at first glance. Only after a second look does one see that they are stuffed animals set in a true to nature environment. They are photographs that I took in the American Museum of Natural History.
The object is a plastic bird perching on a branch sticking out from the wall. The bird reacts to motion, in other words, as soon as someone approaches, it starts to chirp and move its head and tail.

Veins

The content of the two minute animated sequence “Veins” is a closeup of my cleavage. It is seen covered with veins. These veins move and coalesce. They become independent and move into new positions, then they fade from the cleavage. |
Are you real?

In the video work titled “Are you real?”, I have morphed virtual women’s faces with real ones. Both the internet (virtual) and women from my immediate environment (real) served as my source material. Reality and fiction, as well as anonymity and familiarity, are smoothly integrated with one another in these videos. |
Birthmarks, a star map on our

Drawing number 5 out of a series of 10.
“Birthmarks,....” consists of eight square drawings. On these drawings, I reduced and drew the pattern of my birthmarks on various parts of my body.
I then compared them with a star chart and sketched in the constellations that fit into my drawings.
A description and an interpretation are part of the project.

is a short video of 38 seconds. It will be projected into a room corner. You can see a women, which is going in two tunnels, the image is getting blurry and finally you will only see the colors. |
Jenny and the Labyrinth

In this video the main character is Jenny, a digitel women. The video is related to computer games. Jenny is in a labyrinth and her mission is to collect symbols. She is starting here mission in underwear and with out hair. With each symbole she is getting more and more dressed. Until she is totelly dressed and she goes up in the next level. In this video I pictured myself as a digital computer hero. I´m dancing in a loop to brasilian samba music.

Chiromantie

The work "Chiromantie" is an animation, in which you can see the palm of my hands with the lines in it. During the animation these lines are constantly changing and transforming themselves. New lines are appearing as well as old ones disappearing or getting stronger. The result is a hand, which has the perfect opportunity to lead a successful life with good qualities, health and money.
The duration of the video is 2:30 minutes. The video will be accompanied with a drawing on which you can see the locations of the lines, the name as well as a text which includes information about each line. |
