Olga JÜrgenson

About the Artist

OLGA JÜRGENSON

Statement

Olga Jürgenson has been practicing as an artist since 1992 and has enjoyed an interesting journey from her Fine Art education focusing on Socialist Realism in St. Petersburg, Russia to current work as a contemporary digital and Installation artist living and working in the UK.

New media have formed an important component of her practice since 1999 and she currently works across a range of media and disciplinary boundaries. In recent and current projects Jürgenson has developed work in the areas of Installation, Projected Video, Photography and Digital Printmaking, Sculpture, Textile, Painting, Sound and Performance.

Over the past few years many of her diverse and multi-layered works have been created/ constructed specifically for certain environments and/or in response to particular themes /narratives. The recent works include a large-scale print which was hung on a medieval archway in Hainburg, Austria, cakes decorated with political statements, a projection of Jürgenson’s karaoke video set up for audience participation and two exquisitely painted replicas of Van Gogh’s The Potato Eaters as an element within an installation.

Despite the fact that many of her works focus on social and political issues, they are at the same time full of humour and accessible to a wider public by being both engaging and entertaining. The artist is constantly exploring new media and disciplines; this research informs and develops the work while its visual impact is always central.
