I am a some what gifted storyteller of Irish true stories in paint. Much like many of my ancient ancestors. Who are reputed to be the first makers and painters of the Curraghs, hence the surname. My ancestors can be traced in Newry way back when, they are mentioned in the book of Kells, my ancient line is King Olaf Curran a vikeing who built Dublin in 1000, He fought for the irish at Clontarif. I have had a couple of shows In Ireland but I feel shows are for those who want to display thier pigs and horses, my paintings are neither, so i stopped showing. I was invited to the R.H.A IN 2001, this event was a high light In my life. I depicted the Irish heroes of my time, & of the far ancient past. Many of these were and are beggars, soldiers, heriones & pioneers. In generaly I paint our proud Irish people. All of them,& this includes those who came from foreign shores and mingled amongst them. Many who were and are exemplars of courage and independence. Now at a time after the country has struggled for national unity and a sense of Irish identity. I hope my work offer's an inspiring interpretation of the old and recent history along with some of the character and a glimses of the hoped for future. Like so many of my countrymen,I am optimist, a bit romantic and a dedicated patriot. Self apprasial !! My paintings also express what i see to be the ambitions & hopes and concerns of todays Irish, many of whom turn a blind eye to that which should never be forgotten, that is the people of Irelands Century's of pain and struggle. While I know I am an unimportant & unappreciated Irish artist,my heart and soul goes into every image I paint. I believe much of the time while painting that I am actually with those that I paint. My relative obscurity is due to the fact there is little or no support for a person like my self who refuses to beg or kiss ass to get on,&I worry not, people will see my art one day. Prostuting art is not what I call being an artist. I am 58 years old a self taught artist painting since 1998. I paint in my own contemporary style, which came to be developed In the eyes of the world In 2001. Recently I have come to love painting many of the untruths In the archives of our catholic culture here In Newry which lie buried by the bespoilers since the reformation. This link below, show's my dedication to the same. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/06/17/ncastle117.xml The truth In all must be told if we are to go forward, but as you can see from the Sun Telegraph, It has taken me 11 years to reveal one of the bitterest untruths, Newry has faced. It needs to be remember I did not build or bring about this Castle, but It is my duty to pull it down, In order that the truth prevail & Newryabbey be returned to the monastic trail.

The legacy
2006 90+66 |
|
The painting shows the decisions being made by a family in ireland today, this in the aftermath of the troubles, belongings are strewn in the street, doors are broken windows smashed, much like those scenes during the evictions of the times of the famine, the family in the image are in despair in a todays geto land, drug related crime has led to thier down fall, they are in general a decent family, no drug takers no drinkers, they are leaving the legacy. |
The forgotten Chapel Of Newry
2005 60 by 50 approx |
|
This painting shows a discovery i made when contending issues about my culture and its beginnings in N.Ireland. I discovered the almost forgotten midieval chapel of the virgin mary that has been buried under a bakery for almost 100 yeras, before this it was hidden by historian neglect for 400 years because of its culture and it catholic background. The painting shows our lord lifting the abbey the chapel is part off from the ruins and revealing it to the world as it should for the first time in 500 years,in short its reborn. religon. |
The Last Red Knight
2006 60 by 46 approx |
|
This painting shows the 2nd abbey of Newry which was built on a shelf of rock on the side of a mountain in 1144 below the first abbey. The images brings together the birth of this lower abbey in 1144 & and its rebirth recently on the discovery of its ancient chapel. |

THEY DONT CARE, FOR THEY KNOW THEY GO HOME TO FEED ON SEA WEED. FOR SUCH AN ACTION DURING THE ENGLISH EVICTIONS IN IRELAND, THEY WOULD BE EVICTED AND STARVED TO DEATH. |
BOBBY
2006 USUAL STUFF VERY BIG |
|
In 2003 I developed a unique way of painting wild windy roof tops, i have come to develope these ideas more and more as this picture shows. THIS SHOWS AN ISLAND, THE WINDY TORN THATCH, A SANDY ISLAND. MANY WARRIORS IN IRELAND DIED FOR SUCH A SMALL PATCH,the roof depicts the face of such a man, this painting is dtill on going. |

3 Irish clowns in an abbey
2006 usual acrylics 24 by 18 inches |
|
This painting shows 3 people dressed as clowns, they huddle together in a reception house of a medieval abbey which was built by the cistercian monks in 1153, In Newry co down N.Ireland. The Newry council demolished this large building in 1973. Its my opinion the 3 clowns have been looking for this building,& claiming to have found it in a different area, a mix up in historical records you may ask. The answer to the problem may lie in the cistercian map of that area, but do clowns care about such things. ? |
A beautiful Place with sad memories
2008 acrylics 24 by 18 inches |
|
The painting is about colour, while it depicts a sad and yet a lovey scene, it is hoped you will be lured into the picture from centerto right and then left. ? |

| Education and biography |
| I never went to school much. However while i was attending the Abbey school of Newry, i was evicted from the art class for ever. I also ran away from home at a young age, the streets of the world became my classes. I have exhibited in the U.S.A & across Ireland, but I do not think this is what art is about & so i have stopped exhibiting. |
| |
| Future shows |
| Dont like shows, shows are for, horses, pigs and people with money, i have none yet my ancestors owned this whole country side. How does that work out ? Woe is me, lol |
