| About the Artist |
What is old is new again. I think of myself as a time traveling old master who has arrived in the present and sees the impressionist paintings and wants to incorporate their style. |

Notre-Dame de Paris
2006 61 x 91 cm |
|
A shaft of light breaks through the winter sky of Paris, illuminating the cathedral. The stormy sky hovers above the gothic architecture that seems to hold it up. All of this is reflected in the Seine waters, and the wet cobble stones of the quai. Parisians are captured in their everyday occupations, as if a huge flash has gone off. |
Roof Tops of Paris
1974 Oil Paint on Canvas 61 x 91 cm |
|
View from an apartment on rue de l Echaudé in the Paris Quartier Latin. I painted it from life over three days during a sunny spring time spell. Outside there was a street fair with a South American harpist playing. I have always loved the roof tops of Paris, with their myriad of different chimneys, mansard roofs and micro life of servant quarters. In the distance you can see the St Chapelle, Notre-Dame, St Etienne du Mont and the Pantheon. |
Iguazu Falls
2005 Oil Painting on Board 91 x 61 cm |
|
One of the 8 wonders of the natural world, Iguazu was featured in the movie Mission. It is an incredible world of falling water and jungle that bridges the borders of Argentina and Brazil. This picture captures the moment I first saw it at sunset. No picture can capture the sound and thunder of the falls, the thousands of birds in the air, the exoticness of it all. Two Chestnut eared Aracaris (similar to Toucans) rest on a branch, while the dark water reaches the edge to plundge into the mist. The large rock that has fallen off the falls is three stories high. |
Taos Pueblo New Mexico
1999 Oil on Canvas 92 x 41 cm |
|
Taos Pueblo in Northern New Mexico is an ancient adobe city, inhabited for a millineum, and the residents sill live without electricity nor running water - by choice. It is a powerful place, beautiful in its setting with the mountains framing it in the background. I first did the drawing for the painting in 1969. I took pictures of it in 1980 and like an old wine, painted it 30 years later. It is a timeless place, divorced from the modern madness of instant gratification and manic narcissism of our modern world. |
Natchez Steam Wheeler New Orleans
1999 Oil paint on Board 51 x 40 cm |
|
A hot humid New Orleans afternoon, sitting on the levee waiting for the steam boat to cast off. The Natchez is one of the last of the original steam paddle boats navigating the muddy waters of the Mississippi. Like a dream vision from a Mark Twain novel, she overlooks the city, a hauting from a time of crinollin dresses and better manners. I lived in Lousiana for years, and wanted to capture the languidness of the scene. |
Astrolabe barge on Seine river Paris
2006 Watercolor 51 x 36cm |
|
This is a scene of my visit to a friend who lives on a barge in Paris. Rainy spring day, the Eiffle tower engulfed by storm laden clouds - oddly it is not a sad scene, but one filled with water falling and transforming everything into slick gunmetal colors. Nostalgic. |
Notre Dame from Isle St Louis
1974 - 2006 Watercolor 41 x 31 cm |
|
One of my favorite views of Paris, sitting on the quais around Isle Sainte Louis, watching barges go by. I started painting this as a student in Paris. Later I added my son and wife in foreground to complete the picture. I think it captures the summer magic of Paris. |
Promenade du Matin
2005 Watercolor 76 x 59 cm |
|
A self portrait of me with my dog, as she sees a squirel. The light and shadows on the snow creates a symphony of color. Who knew white had so many colorsÉ |
| |
