Paul Davies

About the Artist

My art is concerned with 2-dimensional geometric shapes. Out of these abstractions I try to recreate images and visions of the world in which the beauty of everything that nature creates is counterbalanced by a darkening fear of the ruination which our species is bringing to our planet. Central to my images and visions is often a sun shown amongst striations of colour moving from light to dark.

Triumphal Arch

2006
oil on prepared paper(also on canvas)
30 x 30 cms

I enjoy creating architectural fantasies that convey some of the different moods of real buildings. This archway is intended to convey an image of joy at achieving a happy result in some great task.

Defined Sun

2007
oil on canvas
100x100cms

Here the image of the open square is intended to suggest that the beauty of the sky beyond cannot be reached.

Study for Dark Sun One

2006
oil on prepared paper
30x30cms

This is intended to be a rather disturbing image suggestive of natural calamity. A dark sun and a sky that is strangely divided in its colours.

Sun between Yellow Columns

2006
oil on canvas
50.5x50.5

The mood I am trying to create in this painting is one of tranquillity: a sun slowly setting amidst high gathering clouds.

Untitled Four

2007
oil on prepared paper
32x32

I have tried to reduce the image in this painting to absolute simplicity with just a few related shapes in closely linked shades of colour. My intention has been to create an abstract image conclusive to harmony, tranquillity and beauty.

Darkness into Light

2007
oil on canvas
61x61

By way of a series of pixelated squares I have moved from darkness at the very heart of the painting to a peripheral paleness through reds and yellows. There are 2 points of darkness at the centre of the painting, darkness looking at darkness, perhaps the darkness and mystery at the heart of every human being.

Cityscape with Approaching Storm

2008
36x36cms

The modern city is a high tech. glass world and yet it is also a place of fear because modern lifestyles are causing terrible change to our planet. In this painting I tried to link these two diverse ideas.

The Dawn

2007
40x30cms

Here I am trying to create a sense of hope and renewal that comes with each new day. Although pessimistic about our world I would never entirely abandon hope.

In the dark Autumnal Forest

2007
36x36cms

In this painting I have attempted to convey a sense of deep forest surrounding you on all sides - dense and impenetrable as it slowly turns into autumnal colours.

Education and biography
I have lived and worked as an artist, writer and sculptor in many places. Though not formally trained I have been inspired by a life time of looking at and enjoying art.
My work has been shown at galleries in the UK. I have sold on line here and in the USA.

Future shows
I have showen some work at the Florence Biennale for Contemporary Art. I have been invited to exhibit at Montreal next year. I am taking part in a group exhibition at the Adam St. Club, Charing Cross in March & the Waitrose Gallery in Brighton, October.
