Petter Alexander Goldstine

About the Artist

The Individual in society
I started by discovering people on the edges of society and moving inward, into the self. My work is about social awareness in a world desensitized by imagery. Often site specific, my social sculptures stem from a desire for interpersonal meetings in an attempt to make the viewer an essential physical part of what is going on, allowing interpretation to come from outside the event, ultimately confronting them with their own humanity.

The individual, human and non-human environment
A book on eco-philosophy, The Spell of the Sensuous by David Abrams, caused me to begin questioning what it means to be a human in our society faced with a growing distance from our past; namely rituals, nature, rights of passage and the primordial self. Thus I have slowly begun to immerse myself into this fabric between nature and society through several experiences/performances inspired by theories of phenomenology. My role is to experience life unhindered by social norms, then share these experiences to provide understanding and inspiration. Hence I become the metaphor much like a painting.

Process
In my recent work I try to find a method which will set forth a thought process, some sort of research period, without any concrete plans about the outcome or what I will make of it. Often these processes can be seen as a performance in and of themselves; interviews, rituals and travels. This is in contrary to my theater experience where discussion and rehearsal were key elements. In these newer works I allow the process to speak freely, seeking something honest.

The American Dream Today

2005-2007
Relational Performance
about 3 hours

The American Dream Today
Four months traveling around the United States collecting people's dreams for the future and making photographic portraits. Various recipes were also collected. The result is a series of dinner parties based on the recipes i collected and conversations concerning the American Dream as it exists in a global perspective. Guests often share their own dreams. Discussions include the nature and importance of dreams, dreams and goals or ambitions, and societies influence on our dreams. For images from the trip see: www.theamericandreamtoday.blogspot.com

Down to Earth
Nine hours digging my own grave. Laid in it for 30 minutes. Peeled the blisters off my hands. Four hours filling it in.

Of the breath and counting.

2006
Performance
four days

Of the breath and counting.
The Experience: After fasting for three days I walked out of the city and up the mountain, wandered above the clouds until I found my place. There, I made a circle of stones, which I sat in, fasting, for four more days. On the fourth day I walked back to the city. This was my Vision Quest. The Story: One guest enters the space through an elevator. On the floor they see my equipment, through the window they see the mountain I sat upon. We sit down facing each other, my back to the window. I begin by talking about the speed at which society moves, faster and faster, farther away from the natural landscape. I talk about the Native American ritual, The Vision Quest. Then, I tell them my story from the mountain; of the blades of grass that spoke to me, the sun which dipped below the horizon, the sea of clouds below me, distant calls from the city, suffering through the nights, the reindeer who visited me, and my vision. The Exchange: I invite the guest to share a breathing exercise I developed on the mountain. The exercise is deeply relaxing allowing the mind to open up. After the exercise concludes, I ask the guest if they have any questions. Often a deeply personal dialogue about life would ensue.
