| Phillip Jacobs |
| |
|
Phillip Jacobs is a Welsh born artist based in Swansea, Wales (UK).
 |
| |
| About the Artist |
Currently, Phillip's work is based predominately on the landscape. He uses oil paint to create bold, expressive canvases, rich in colour and texture. These can range from the abstract to semi-representational.
“I try to depict a real place with a poetic, private mythology of my own. A dream can influence me as much as a drawing, the underlying history and geology of a place can be as important as the visible terrain. In my studio I recall my journeys through the landscape, expressing a personal interpretation through the medium of oil paint”.
He describes his latest series of landscapes as “anthropomorphic” - paintings that exist somewhere between figurative and landscape.
“One painting can express the land as being female, fecund and reproductive and the sea as a male, penetrating element; in another painting the curves of a mountainside echo the contours of the human figure.
I often enter into another world in my studio, where instinct and imagination take over. When I begin a painting I sometimes have little idea of how it will look in its final form. A painting, I believe, has a life of its own - I just let it take me where it wants to go, it is this that captivates me the most”.
