I still believe in the old Renaissance ideal of the universal man, not in the sense of knowing everything about everything but as the ambition to understand universal structures from different perspectives. The study of the category of information forms a unifying paradigm between science and the humanities. Art, science and business, all deal with information. Understanding the concept of information is one of the main scientific challenges of our time. |
| About the Artist | |
As a painter I'm interested in good professional painting. I believe that new insights of science can help us to develop new forms of pictural expression. As a philosopher I'm interested in esthetics, formal analysis of information in works of art and their development. | Recently I was asked to do a painting for the meeting room of the Junta de Freguesia de Ribeira Seca on Sao Jorge. They wanted to have a view on the famous faja de Caldeira de Santo Christo. We decided on a panoramic view (150 x 70 cm). We wanted to stress the unique quality of the spot. The quiet water in the lagoon in which the church is reflected, the waves breaking on the dam, the vulcanic slopes that rise almost vertically above the faja. One of the most beautful spots in Europe. |

| Started painting in 1968. First solo exhibition Leiden 1977. Studied philosophy in Leiden, Phd in theoretical computer science, Vrije Akademie Den Haag in art. Combined art, science and business my whole life. Currently part time professor of learning and adaptive systems at University of Amsterdam. The rest of the time I paint or travel.
