| About the Artist |
I create artwork that defines the world around me. Theme's of popular culture, mass-consumerism and politics fill our waken world and in turn, I utilize these reoccuring elements within my work. I convey the currency of our times both in the subject matter itself and in the media I chose to execute the vision. I draw heavily from the California Assemblage pop art movement and commercial art movements of the 1960's and 1970's. I also enjoy the color theories presented by the abstract expressionists.
My art work subscribes to the most common virtue of past masters: experimentation. |

| Education and biography |
Brekan created his first oil paintings at age 12. While still in high school Ralph excelled in visual and theatrical arts. His senior project (1992) shocked his peers, and much of the academic community who had to endure reviewing his portfolio for possible admission the following year. Inspired by a class field trip to the museum which exposed young Brekan to the works of Wallace Berman, David Hockney and other California Assemblage movement. From that encounter Brekan's bold departure from traditional studio art leap couragously towards the liberated, free-form world of assemblage. Inspired Brekan create a suite of life-sized, half-naked, self portraits using a conventional photocopy machine; what would become Brekan's first "xerox-collage". Using xerographic printing and a radical approach to David Hockney's photo-collage technique, Brekan's creative experimentation earned university-level credits while still in high school. Brekan took a regional art scholorship, pursuing art to Scottsdale Community college, where he studied motion picture and creative writing. Creatively Brekan waxed new artistic visions whilst academicly his ambitions waned. Much attention was focused on socializing on and off campus. It was during these years (1993-1995) Brekan contributed much visual art and multimedia to the Phoenix rave and art-party culture. By 1995 Brekan left college completely to full time pursuit of motion picture and stage projects. Although, he became all but a roaming drug-addled, rock and roll roadie, his best work and years were right around the corner.
Pursuing a change in lifestyle, and possible work abroad, Brekan briefly retreated to the Czech Republic (winter of 1995-1996). In Prague, he mingled with expatriates, photographed the landscapes and contributed short stories to the English speaking literary magazine "Optimism" (1996). Ill and broken, Brekan and his fiance Theresa returned to downtown Phoenix. There he began to create his extravagant landscapes of the landscapes around Prague developing his unique collage technique. These works unveiled at his first major collaborative art event, Swirling Daze: Multimedia Arts Extravaganza at the Alwun House in downtown Phoenix (1997). The shows success spawned annual events.
In December of 1999, Ralph Michael Brekan was invited to exhibit in the "Millennium Art Exhibition in Great Britain which included hundreds of international artists and celebrities such as Ewen McGregor and Emma Thompson. Brekan's exhibited works sold at auction in Great Britain to benefit the "Diana, Princess of Wales, Children's Hospital in Great Wyrly.
Ever-evolving, and influenced by his work in cinema, Brekan continued his exploration of digital media and electronic tools, applying cinema trickery to his digital photomontage series My Love Affair With Barbie. The impact of the series captured brief world-wide attention and sold several international collectors. In 2002, Brekan exhibited at The Global Cafe in London's trendy Soho art's district. The following season produced a show with a gala reception at Agora Gallery in New York.
In 2003, Brekan's portrait of Andy Warhol was acquired by Musee Artcolle, the international center for the documentation of the art of collage and assemblage, in Sergines, France. Brekan's further explored photomontage the witty "Patriot Action Figures" collage unveiled at Aldo Castillo Gallery in Chicago on September 19th, 2004. In 2004, Brekan's work traveled to eleven cities, seven countries, and three continents, making Brekan a highly visible artist in the international art scene.
Brekan resides near Phoenix, Arizona in the United States of America. He works full-time, creating new artwork regularly. |
