| About the Artist |
Whether I am working with the vocabulary of architectural space, landscape, interiors or the figure, my goal is one of distillation: how can I explore the psychological territory before me, distil the information available and yet maintain the emotion and enigma of what I saw.
I am obsessed with light as metaphor, and with the philosophical equation of just how little light is necessary to dispel darkness. It is in the apparent ordinary and unembellished that I find power, radiance and resonance.
In my work, questions are asked by voices that do not shout, and the relationship between my photographs and those who look at them is, I hope, much like the conversation that two people not well known to each other might engage in late at night – a kind of sotto voce exchange in which the participants are required to lean toward one another, quieten down and listen carefully.

Figure as Dream I
2008 |
|
I am quite often drawn to interpreting an image or an idea by photographing what is behind me, by means of shooting into one or more reflective surfaces. This often gives me a better understanding of the emotional narrative that might be in the process of being played out. The images in this series show the figure within a dreamlike atmosphere and for me, they are laden with some of the unease and emotional expression that one finds in a Munch portrait or an Albert Pinkham Ryder landscape. |
