Emotional and intellectual reactions to the same images can be very different and it is this difference that I seek to explore within my work.

Images of the slaughterhouse and the battlefield are common place in our culture but the real truth of these horrors remain hidden in favour of a more acceptable symbolic approach.

I want to relate the work to the broader area of what it means to be human and our relationship to other species. By expressing an oblique but still direct comparison with the human form and those of other animals, I want to challenge existing perceptions and
preconceptions of our own place in the world.

I have been very influenced by the
philosophical writing and thinking of John Gray and Peter Singer, amongst others, who question our notions of ‘superiority’ over other species and throws up issues concerning the rights of animals other than human. Many artists working today are dealing with a combination of art and activism and striving to produce work, which although may not necessarily be overtly didactic nontheless has a strong political element with which I strongly identify.
