Sally Sheinman

About the Artist

I am inspired by what people and their civilizations leave behind, the tiny fragments of colour. A trip to the British Museum is as inspiring in terms of colour, texture and intellectual stimulus as visits to contemporary shows. I also have a BA in the History of Art, so I am influenced by all kinds of art from pre-history (cave paintings) to Classical Art to Byzantine to Monet and Matisse to Abstract Expressionist to Andy Warhol to Minimalism to Conceptual Art. My works is extremely important to me. I am completely compulsive about my art. I work on my art in some way every single day even when I am on holiday.

ARTKACINA

2006
Each ARKACINA is a slightly different size but all can be held in a hand

These individual objects represent the past but also hope and luck for the future mixed with a bit of fun. The piece will impart the spirit of 11 years of the space, events, shows, people and activities of firstsite.

DAYS

2001
Each DAY is a painted wooden box with oil paints.
10.2cm x 10.2cm x 2.4cm

DAYS came from an interest in recording the ups and downs that people experience over a year. For this remarkable project, Sally selected one event, emotion or sensation each day for a year of her life Each one is represented as a small, exquisitely painted box, accompanied by a written thought. From floor to ceiling, she publicly lays out 365 days of her private life in the form of intimate images, which honestly track the ups and downs of her day-to-day. In her paintings, the artist develops a language of communication through words, patterns, textures and color that suggest dinner with friends, bathroom tiles, the expectation of a holiday or the death of her mother. What do you paint to represent a life?

THE WISHING CEREMONY

2005
Wood
Each WISHING BOOTH is 2100mm (height) X 915mm X 915 mm

The Wishing Ceremony’ invites you to confess your deepest wishes and desires. Housed in six intimate installations, Sheinman’s collection of hand-painted wishing tokens hang like mystic icons – acting as an inspiration to make a wish. Visitors to ‘The Wishing Ceremony’ may leave their own hand-written wishes attached to the wall of the structure. Whether it’s a generic wish for ‘worldpeace’ or for ‘all the money in the world’, to the more personal ‘I wish I could dance’ or ‘I wish I’d told him I loved him’. ‘The Wishing Ceremony’ is an opportunity to share your innermost secrets and desires with the world, in complete anonymity. Which leaves only one question. What would your wish be?

SACRED VESSEL 38 This vesse

2004
Paper
74cm X 56cm

SACRED VESSELS is comprised of forty nine sparkling paintings on paper which depict imaginary vessels containing potions or powders that offer the promise of wisdom, inner calmness or a joyful and prosperous life. This unique work explores the relationship between art and antiquities. Exhibited amongst the drawings will be objects from the archaeological and historical collections of Rugby and Northampton. Showing the objects and drawing, not only shows Sally's broad inspirations, but the works together raise issues about how outlooks change over time.

Education and biography
I studied painting at the State University of New York at Albany in Albany, New York and later studied art at Hunter College in New York, New York where my tutors included Tony Smith (sculptor) and Robert Morris. I have lived in Britain for over 20 years and maintain a studio in Northamption.

THE WISHING CEREMONY

This sculptural piece invites participants to make a wish and attach it to the structure. Each section has cut out panels which house wishing tokens. The square-shaped tokens, each one different from the next, laboriously and lovingly hand painted (over 1000) acts as an inspiration to the participant to make their wish. After touching a wishing token, they are invited to leave a written version of their wish (anonymous of course) by attaching it 'post it' style to the wall of the structure.

SACRED VESSELS

These 49 sparkling drawings with a corresponding description that suggests the function of the substance carried in the vessel. These are potions and lotions that heal, ease or aid some ritual whether it be for allowing tolerance to flourish in society, aiding vivid dreams or arresting the ageing process. They are imaginary relics from a fictional past and place, but ones that seem to offer hope for the future.

DAYS

This autobiographical project represents 365 days of my life (Jan'01-Jan'02). My visual diary takes the form of small square boxes accompanied by a brief written caption with each entry inspired by a particular event, sensation or emotion. I developed a language of communication through words, patterns, textures and colour that suggest - dinner with friends - the expectation of a holiday - the death of my mother.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

This commission consists of 50 pieces. Each piece contains a painting, text and Perspex. The text was developed by the South and East Belfast Trust and relates to the staff and users of the facility. The pieces are placed throughout the building in hidden places higher and lower than normal - little unexpected pleasures.

NON-ESSENTIAL SIGNAGE

This commission was a result of a combination of the reorganization of Arts Council England and a relocation of one of its regional offices which allowed me to herald the new changes of this national arts organization. I was able to express the impact of change using a new approach in my work and expressing the change on individuals.

Future shows
ARTKACINA

This commission will consist of over 500 unique handheld sculptural pieces which represent the experience and achievements of firstsite. Firstsite is a contemporary public art gallery in Colchester which is closing down in an old space and opening in a new building. At the time of this they wanted a piece of work which they could give away. These individual objects represent the past but also hope and luck for the future mixed with a bit of fun. The piece will impart the spirit of 11 years of the space, events, shows, people and activities of firstsite.

I am also working on a new discovering in Arcus, the land of the Sacred Vessels.
