| Sarah Misselbrook |
| |
|
Sarah Misselbrook, born 1977 in Southampton, England. I studied at Nottingham Trent University and received a first class honours degree in Fine Art. At Portsmouth School of Art, the foundation year saw the beginning of my multi media practice surrounding such issues as the body, the artist and consumption.
 |
| |
| About the Artist |
My work is a way of exorcising something from myself, which is very emotional, maybe troubled. I become a subject who produces that which is visible. It is my silent, non-verbal response.
My practice involves digital photography, the manipulation of my body using this process, documentation of hair growth and removal, cleansing, grooming, this relentless self surveillance and obedience.
There are a multiplicity of socio-cultural concerns about femininity and feminism, about the body, about individual control and consumption within a consumer society. Food is the medium through which women are addressed, in turn; food has become the language of women’s response.
The artwork is a play on traditional sculptural concerns, the process of adding or taking away. However, this is not achieved using stone or wood but chocolate or soap, degradable or even edible materials which underline the transient state of the body. The final works show the seductive yet repellent nature of human anatomy. |

I Dream of a Common Language
2005 50x150x7cm each |
|
A triptych of canvases depicting varying states of female ’ness’ using make-up, fat, chocolate and other viscous materials struggle to speak to the viewer. It embodies the skeletal, sexual and suffering self – one body moving through each state. |
Going That Same Way
1998 76x51cm each |
|
Going That Same Way presents a photographic diary recording the artist modelling a sculptural casing with spikes protruding from the spinal column, like a skeleton only clad with skin. |
1m2
2003 100x100x32cm |
|
1m2 presents a full, solid plaster cast of the artist’s body. The ‘made to measure’ steel cage restricts the figure whilst threatening and defensive spikes protrude from the spinal column. |
Followed
2000 50x70x17cm |
|
Followed presents solid white chocolate vertebrae mounted on a steel armature. The cupped hands for tailbone ask the viewer for help or are persuading more followers. |
Bird of Paradise
1999 77x40x15cm |
|
The female form is adorned with pheasant feathers following the contours of the body. Producing a purely aesthetic surface image upon a hollow framework. |
Tart
1997 44x33cm |
|
Showing female as consumer, she is unaware that she is the commodity and must join this disciplined quest. Tart uses jam, wax and fat overlaying photo booth images. |
