| About the Artist |
2008 Statement -
Food and Desire
The works in Food and Desire, to me, tell more than just the story of my battle of wills. It does explore the battle between necessity and passion – one feeding the other and the frustration along the way – fighting to create. Where would I rather be? What would I rather be doing?
The painting waitress – the waitress who paints – the painter who waits…. Waits to create… waits to paint.
The work explores my everyday world… the means in which I need to meet to paint… as well as the NEED to paint. It also explores the mysteries or other persona of the waitress… such a personal yet non-attached job… an intimate yet generic job or role. Serving an audience. What does a waitress do when she is not waiting? Looking at the idea that she is more than just a waitress… the notion that she could be anyone or anything outside of her waiting job. Of course it is well know that many musicians, artists and actors have done this sort of job. Often it’s a way to make ends meet whilst waiting for a break or recognition or respect in their chosen field of the arts…. Waiting to be noticed? People have no idea of what else she, (the waitress), can do other than carry multiple plates and pour champagne with one hand behind their back and a smile on their face… In a sense they, themselves are actors, for the job is role-play.
There is also the personal and sensual element to food and taste… the quality, presentation and service can contribute to making someone’s night, or day, special… memorable…
Some remember you some forget…. the same goes the other way. Some want to know more about you, others pretend they already know and some couldn’t even remember which one of us took the drink order. Some are understanding some just demanding… some want all your attention some want hardly any… you learn a lot about people… but what do people learn about the waitress?
“She’s just a waitress” – oh no she is not – she is so much more….
I am an artist who waits.
2006 Statement -
In her painting, Simone explores the theme of her major inspiration. Her current works are dominated once again by a Japanese theme, this time focusing on the figurative aspect. Some of the imagery carries on from previous exhibitions, however, most is being seen for the first time. These works see Simone continue her exploration of the medium, hand stitching, which adds a textural element to her work.
Having travelled to Japan for a second time in 2005, these works are very much influenced by her experience there and the art of simplicity; the ability to creatively maximise the use of something minimalistic - the Japanese have mastered the art of this and Simone has applied this theory to recent and current work. Using a very simplified palette, Simone explores the relationship between colour and image and the mood created within that relationship, thereby focusing on minimal colour and maximum impact.
These figurative works focus more on mood than formalities, they are not necessarily about recreating reality, they are interpretations, providing us with something that reality does not.
"I see art as an expression of self, as well as a means of communicating with people. My ultimate aim every time I create a piece of art is to engage the viewer. This engagement will hopefully enable the viewer to be moved beyond first impressions and to thus enter a visual dialogue with the piece, ideally transforming their experience from the abstract to a more tactile and meaningful realm. I believe passionately that art can foster this process or transformation."
